I believe that the warranty is activated the moment the device is turned on and the setup screen appears. I bought two iPod Classics and only used one two years ago. I opened the second one last Monday and started using it. The warranty on the second one showed it is active for one year from last Monday September 1. The problem was after two years, the battery was dead so I took it to Apple and they replaced the battery under the warranty. The iPod only worked while plugged in. The only time the warranty starts upon purchase is if you buy the device directly from Apple. Like others have mentioned, they obviously know when it was purchased. From the moment you buy the product. When you buy it. Your receipt proves the date, though if it should also be registered. And if it is a Mac, do consider the Apple care option before the warranty expires. It is additional cover and well worth the cost. I am sure the warranty is no longer valid. Apple do not make mistakes like that. You were wise to check here. Phones are one area where warranties are not international either. The warranty and any service that goes with it, must be justified and the repairs carried out in, the country from where it was bought. I suppose that if one buys device from resellers and keeps it unboxed, the warranty still be valid. This is it exactly. The warranty begins when you purchase it. If you buy an iPhone from a grey market seller and they purchased the iPhone 6 months earlier then you will have a 6 month warranty on it. I have just checked with my friend , he bought an iPhone in Russia. And his iPhone 4s still has 8 months of warranty. The warranty ends one year from the date of original purchase.
