Unlike virt-manager, virt-install is a command line tool that allows you to create KVM guests on a headless server. You may ask yourself: "But I can use vmbuilder to do this, why do I need virt-install?" The difference between virt-install and vmbuilder is that vmbuilder is for creating Ubuntu-based guests, whereas virt-install lets you install all kinds of operating systems (e.g. Linux, Windows, Solaris, FreeBSD, OpenBSD) and distributions in a guest, just like virt-manager. This article shows how you can use it on an Ubuntu 10.10 KVM server.

At Velocity, I saw Adam Langley give a great presentation entitled Overclocking SSL. Last week Adam posted a distilled version of the Overclocking SSL presentation on his blog.

He covers many topics for improving SSL performance. Unfortunately, his recommendations are decidedly focused on how Google runs their servers, and not a practical guide to how to improve your performance with a more standard Apache 2 and mod_ssl setup. Since I don’t work at Google, but I like my web servers to be fast, I decided to try as many of his recommendations as possible with mod_ssl.

Disclaimer I am not a cryptanalyst. Be paranoid when you are messing with SSL, small mistakes can invalidate your entire security framework. Ask your local cryptanalyst about these changes!

If you’re doing any sort of C++ template metaprogramming (like I do in the development of *shameless plug* the memcache++ and the cpp-netlib libraries) then you don’t have to wait too long now for compile times with clang. Not only is clang faster than gcc, but it’s also considerably more standards compliant. I’ve already written about clang before, but why write about it again now?

"Treat every optimization task as if John Miles has just written to inform you that he’s made it faster than your wildest dreams, and you’ll be amazed at what you can do!" So if web caching is not an option, what is the next best thing? To cache parts of the page, put them together, and serve that. You can use a caching tool for this, like Memcached. There's only one catch: the cached content may need to change when any of the things it depends on changes: data, code, user input, and the like. You can pass an expiration time when you add your content to Memcache. This will cause your cache to live only a certain amount of time and then expire. Nice, but we can do better.
