ideal ops checklist

In a perfect world, where things are done well, not just quickly, I would expect to find the following when joining the company:

Documentation

  • Accurate / up-to-date systems architecture diagram

  • Accurate / up-to-date network diagram

  • Out-of-hours support plan

  • Incident management plan

This allows you to use the following video streaming services outside of the US from your Mac without having to use a proxy or VPN, so no big bandwidth issues:

  • Hulu / HuluPlus
  • CBS
  • ABC
  • MTV
  • theWB
  • CW TV
  • Crackle
  • NBC

OSX for Hackers: Yosemite/El Capitan Edition. This script tries not to be *too* opinionated and any major changes to your system require a prompt. You've been warned.

Parallelize assets:precompile
require 'parallel' # gem install parallel (https://github.com/grosser/parallel)
# Monkey patch to Sprockets::StaticCompiler, a class provided by actionpack
# that's used by the assets:precompile task. This patch uses the Parallel gem
# to parallelize asset compilation in the simplest way possible.
#
# Parallel wraps Process.fork to handle things like inter-process communication
# via pipes and determining the maximum number of processes to run based on
# your system's total logical processors. So far only tested on MRI 1.9.3 on OS X.

October 19 2012 - rubygems.org - notes on server

[transcript from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z73uiWKdJhw and irc]

Why is the server unhappy?

  • Bundle API is 70%-80% of traffic and it has to resolve the dependency graph and Marshal
  • x Processes are spinning in Ruby with 380% (of 400% total CPU [4 x 100%])
  • x Bundle can only use vanilla gems, so that's why we have to use Marshal
  • Redis Heapsize
  • Diskspace

Performace patch for ruby-1.9.3-p327

Changes:

  • this version includes backport of Greg Price's patch for speedup startup http://bugs.ruby-lang.org/issues/7158 .

ruby-core prefers his way to do thing, so that I abandon cached-lp and sorted-lf patches of mine.

  • this version integrates 'array as queue' patch, which improves performance when push/shift pattern is heavily used on Array.

This patch is accepted into trunk for Ruby 2.0 and last possible bug is found by Yui Naruse. It is used in production* for a couple of months without issues even with this bug.

First shot at describing the process of building a vanilla OS X box with veewee using only the OS X installer application.
Notes using minstallconfig.xml
- Create base OS X vmx w/ veewee:
* HD must be IDE, not SCSI
* Do not define a specific boot device, VM will boot from DMG attached to CD-ROM later in process
- Obtain "Install OS X Mountain Lion.app"/"Install Mac OS X Lion.app"
- Mount InstallESD.dmg w/ shadow file from "Install Mac OS X Lion.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg"
* hdiutil attach "[...]/Install Mac OS X Lion.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg" -owners on -shadow /tmp/InstallESD.shadow

Elixir Newbie Digest, Issue 2

Intro

Today I'll cover three basic topics:

  • Mistakes and misuses every Erlanger does when he starts to write in Elixir

  • Dependencies and Mix

  • Writing OTP-enabled Elixir applications
