I was drawn to programming, science, technology and science fiction
ever since I was a little kid. I can't say it's because I wanted to
make the world a better place. Not really. I was simply drawn to it
because I was drawn to it. Writing programs was fun. Figuring out how
nature works was fascinating. Science fiction felt like a grand
adventure.
Then I started a software company and poured every ounce of energy
into it. It failed. That hurt, but that part is ok. I made a lot of
mistakes and learned from them. This experience made me much, much

Phoenix 1.3.x to 1.4.0 Upgrade Guides

Phoenix 1.4 ships with exciting new features, most notably with HTTP2 support, improved development experience with faster compile times, new error pages, and local SSL certificate generation. Additionally, our channel layer internals receiveced an overhaul, provided better structure and extensibility. We also shipped a new and improved Presence javascript API, as well as Elixir formatter integration for our routing and test DSLs.

This release requires few user-facing changes and should be a fast upgrade for those on Phoenix 1.3.x.

The mix phx.new archive can now be installed via hex, for a simpler, versioned installation experience.

Ubuntu 16 – how to increase maximum file open limit ( ulimit -n )

If you are setting up nginx, chances are you will discover your worker_connections is at some low number, such as 1024. You can’t increase this number unless you increase kernel limit as well. First of all run cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max to discover your maximum limit.

abc@ubuntu:~$ cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max
1048576
abc@ubuntu:~$ ulimit -n

Setting up a Basic Phoenix+Vue+Brunch project

Work in Progress: Phoenix + Vue + Brunch

This documents how I integrate Vue 2.0 with Phoenix 1.x using the default brunch pipeline.

The toolchain

Start out by adding the vue-brunch plugin. You will need a version later than 1.2.3 in order to be able to use the extractCSS option (see later). At the time of writing, 1.2.3 was still the version fetched by npm so I suggest just getting the tip of the dev branch for now (this branch is for Vue 2.0 compatibility anyway):

npm install git+https://github.com/nblackburn/vue-brunch.git#dev --save-dev

# You will need fswatch installed (available in homebrew and friends)
# The command below will run tests and wait until fswatch writes something.
# The --stale flag will only run stale entries, it requires Elixir v1.3.
fswatch lib/ test/ | mix test --stale --listen-on-stdin

Security - the elephant in the room. Everyone agrees that it is very important but few takes it seriously. We at RisingStack want you to do it right - this is why we have put together this checklist to help you guide through the must have security checks before your application is enabled to thousands of users/customers.
Most of these items are general and applies to all languages and frameworks not just Node.js - however some of the tools presented are Node.js specific. You should also check our introductory Node.js security blogpost.
