Create a bootable OS X ( 10.10 / 10.9 ) Yosemite / Mavericks USB drive.
  1. Download Yosemite

  2. Connect the USB drive ( 8 GB ) to your Mac.

  3. Using Disk Utility (it is found in Other under Launchpad), format the USB drive as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), and name it Yosemite. This can be done from the Erase tab within the app; make sure that there are no multiple partitions (turn to the Partition tab to verify and correct this). Choose GUID Partition Table as the partition scheme and choose OK

  4. Open Terminal (it is found in the same folder as the Disk Utility app).

  5. Use (paste) the following command:

    [If on Yosemite]: sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Yosemite --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app

[If on Mavericks]: sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Yosemite --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app -- nointeraction

Creating an OS X 10.9.X Mavericks bootable installation on a USB flash drive.
Download a copy of Mavericks from the Apple Store. It will save in your /Applications directory and will open once the download is complete. Just quit the installation. If you run the installer it will delete itself so move it to keep a copy.
Format an 8G+ (needs about 6G of space) USB stick with the 'Mac OS X Extended Journaled' format and leave it named 'Untitled' but be sure that you do not have another volume named "Untitled" or the next step could erase something!
Open the Terminal app and run the following command. This copies the resources over to the USB stick and makes it a bootable drive. Check the path, if you moved the file correct the paths.
sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
You should see something like the following, the "Copying installer files..." will take about 20 minutes with not progress indication. Just wait for it.

OSX for Hackers: Yosemite/El Capitan Edition. This script tries not to be *too* opinionated and any major changes to your system require a prompt. You've been warned.

Building and installing Git from source on OS X Lion

Building and installing Git from source on OS X Lion

This outline for building and installing Git has only been tested against Mac OS X 10.7.x (Lion). While these steps may work for previous versions of Mac OS X, I cannot confirm this. Furthermore, you're on your own, if you screw something up, it's not my fault.

If you have Xcode 4, you have Git!

Xcode 4 includes the Git binary at the application level so it's available to itself (located at /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/usr/bin/git). Additionally, Xcode 4 includes a new "Downloads" preference pane to install optional components, one of which are the Command Line Tools (similar to the Dev Tools package that shipped with older versions of Xcode) and once installed, Git (and many other utilities, such as make) is installed at the system level (located at /usr/bin).

*Note: You don't have to install Xcode to use the Command Line Tools; it can be downloaded independently from the Apple Developer site (you need to login, but it's free

Setup OS X 10.7 w/ homebrew, oh-my-zsh, rvm, nvm

Setup new Mac with OSX Lion from scratch.

These commands are good as of 2012-03-18.

Install Xcode 4

The download/install takes a while so start it first. When it finishes downloading you will still need to run it to complete installation.

Note: Make sure you install the XCode Command Line Tools after XCode is done installing. To do this go to Xcodes -> Preferences -> Downloads -> Command Line Tools -> Install. If you don't you might not be able to install brew packages (i.e. brew install wget will fail).*
