Faster SSHing into vagrant

Running vagrant ssh can be slow because it boots up a ruby process, does a bunch of analysis to determine your ssh parameters, and then actually invokes the command. If you want a faster login, try the following:

# Compute the ssh parameters, append them to your global ssh config file
# The --host parameter specifies what you want the vagrant machine to be called
vagrant ssh-config --host vagrant >> ~/.ssh/config

# Now just ssh into that machine directly
ssh vagrant

Theming Slack for OSX

Theming Slack for OSX

So, you love Slack, but you hate applications with large white backgrounds? Why not use Dark Mode!

Unfortunately, Slack does not have a Dark Mode, although it's on their list of possibilities.

But, don't fret - there is a solution! Because the slack native desktop apps are just wrappers around a web app, we can inject our own CSS to customize the application to our liking.

How to (OSX Only)

From Require.js to Webpack - Part 2 (the how)

This is the follow up to a post I wrote recently called From Require.js to Webpack - Party 1 (the why) which was published in my personal blog.

In that post I talked about 3 main reasons for moving from require.js to webpack:

  1. Common JS support
  2. NPM support
  3. a healthy loader/plugin ecosystem.

Here I'll instead talk about some of the technical challenges that we faced during the migration. Despite the clear benefits in developer experience (DX) the setup was fairly difficult and I'd like to cover some of the challanges we faced to make the transition a bit easier.

How to delete a file from a Git repository, but not other users' working copies

How to delete a file from a Git repository, but not other users' working copies

Suppose you have, by mistake, added your IDE's project folder (you know, these .idea folders with all kinds of local paths and configuration data and settings in it) to the Git repository of your project. (We're talking about a whole folder here, but the same rules apply to individual files as well.)

Of course, you only realize that two days after the fact and have already pushed it, and your colleagues have already pulled it. They use the same IDE as you do, so whenever they change a setting or fix paths, they can either

  • commit that, causing nasty merge conflicts for you and others or
  • ignore the changes and carry around a modified file until the end of time without ever committing it.

Why .gitignore won't help
