Creating tracing data from an haproxy access log via fluent bit and opentelemetry collector

Creating opentelemetry tracing data from an haproxy access log

Approach

Unfortunately, otelcol currently has no receiver for logfiles that produces tracing data. There is log tailing functionality, and e.g. a fluent forward protocol receiver, but they all create "log" data, not tracing. I've seen this proof of concept to implement a forward receiver that creates tracing data, but that seems to have no traction and no relation to the upstream project at all (not even git history.

Thus, we've settled on this approach:

Docker credential helper for authenticating from environment variables

docker-credential-gitlab_runner

This is a very basic Docker credential helper that uses environment variables to authenticate to Docker. It's not as secure as the other credential helpers that Docker provides, but it can be very helpful in some circumstances (such as when using it with Gitlab CI).

To set this up, install the docker-credentials-gitlab_runner script somewhere in the Gitlab runner users path (it needs to be named docker-credential-gitlab_runner), then configure the Gitlab runner user's ~/.docker/config.json file to use it:

Verifiers SHOULD NOT impose other composition rules (e.g., requiring mixtures of different character types or prohibiting consecutively repeated characters) for memorized secrets. Verifiers SHOULD NOT require memorized secrets to be changed arbitrarily (e.g., periodically). However, verifiers SHALL force a change if there is evidence of compromise of the authenticator.

Transmission Blocklist

The Transmission torrent client has an option to set a Blocklist, which helps protect you from getting caught and having the DMCA send a letter/email.

It's as simple as downloading and installing the latest client:

Mnemonic Encoding Word List

Mnemonic Encoding Word List

http://web.archive.org/web/20090918202746/http://tothink.com/mnemonic/wordlist.html

  • The wordlist contains 1626 words.
  • All words are between 4 and 7 letters long.
  • No word in the list is a prefix of another word (e.g. visit, visitor).
  • Five letter prefixes of words are sufficient to be unique.
  • The words should be usable by people all over the world. The list is far from perfect in that respect. It is heavily biased towards western culture and English in particular. The international vocabulary is simply not big enough. One can argue that even words like "hotel" or "radio" are not truly international. You will find many English words in the list but I have tried to limit them to words that are part of a beginner's vocabulary or words that have close relatives in other european languages. In some cases a word has a different meaning in another language or is pronounced very differently but for the purpose of the encoding it is still ok - I assume that when the encoding is
