A solução que encontrei foi utilizar o pacote https://github.com/vinkla/laravel-hashids

ai na model tive que incluir:
    public function getRouteKey()
    {
        return Hashids::encode($this->getKey());
    }
    
e no controller ao chamar pelo id tive que usar decode:
    public function edit($id)
