Canaan OSM Tracing Guide

#OSM Tracing Guide for Canaan, Haiti

In 2010, a magnitude 7 earthquake struck Port-au-Prince, Haiti, destroying hundreds of thousands of buildings and displacing 2.3 million people. 50,000 of these individuals resettled in Canaan, on the northern outskirts of Port-au-Prince. Canaan has not been formally recognized by the government and lacks running water, electricity, paved roads, and other services. We're mapping the area as part of a risk reduction and urban planning effort.

This tracing guide focuses on the most important features in the area: roads, buildings, and walls.

##Getting started

First, make sure you're using the right background imagery. iD Editor will default to using Bing aerial, but for this area we have high-res drone imagery.

Dhaka Tracing Guide

#OSM Tracing Guide for Dhaka, Bangladesh

Dhaka is a rapidly-growing megacity with extreme vulnerability to climate change. The city is home to about 15 million people, and lies just above sea level - putting it at very high risk for intense flooding and storms. Infrastructure is poor and poverty is high, limiting the city's capacity to adapt.

Despite being the world's densest city, Dhaka lacks accurate and comprehensive maps of the road network and buildings. We're interested in getting OSM up-to-date in order to help with resilience and urban planning efforts, and to act as a base map if a major weather event occurs.

Dhaka can be tricky to map because of its density, so we put together this tracing guide to go over how to map the most important features in the area: buildings, water bodies, and roads.

Here are some things you can do with Gists in GistBox.
// Use Gists to store code you would like to remember later on
console.log(window); // log the "window" object to the console

OSM Tracing Guide for Khayelitsha, South Africa

#OSM Tracing Guide for Khayelitsha, South Africa

Khayelitsha is a slum in Cape Town, South Africa, where the American Red Cross and its partners will be piloting a solar-powered fire sensor system. Fires regularly occur in urban slums like Khayelitsha, often resulting from indoor stove use, trash burning, faulty wires and residents trying to keep warm. Evacuation can be very difficult, making fires a very dangerous event.

The results of this mapping will guide fire sensor program decisions/planning and will be used by firefighters during their response operations.

This tracing guide focuses on the most important features in the area: buildings and roads.

HOT membership statement

■ How did you become involved in HOT?

I became involved with HOT in 2014 after joining the American Red Cross GIS team and seeing the incredible mapping work that took place in response to the Ebola outbreak.

■ Could you tell us about your involvement in HOT, mapping and/or humanitarian response?

I’ve taken part in tracing, supporting mapathons, and volunteer field trainings as part of the Missing Maps project and for Red Cross programs in various countries, including Rwanda, Haiti, and Nepal. I will be helping to lead a new Red Cross mapping hub and cross-border mapping initiatives in West Africa, and I just finished a deployment for information management / mapping as part of the Red Cross response to the migration/refugee crisis in Europe.

■ What does HOT mean to you?
