How to download SIPRI arms transfer data as a CSV file instead of a rich-text file.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute's Arms Transfers Database provides a tool to download the data. By default, that output is an .rtf rich-text file — not so easy to analyze with your favorite spreadsheet or statistics software. Luckily, getting a CSV of the data isn't very difficult. Here's how.

To get all transfers for 2014, by seller, run this command in your terminal:

curl http://armstrade.sipri.org/armstrade/html/export_trade_register.php --compressed \
    --data 'low_year=2014' \
    --data 'high_year=2014' \
    --data 'seller_country_code=' \
 --data 'buyer_country_code=' \

Reverse-engineering the dynamic wallpaper file format in macOS Mojave.

The dynamic wallpaper in MacOS Mojave is a single 114 MB .heic file that seems to contain 16 embedded images.

It also contains the following binary plist data in its metadata under the key "Solar". It's an array of 16 items, each with four keys:

  • i (integer). This seems to be the image index.
  • o (integer). This is always 1 or 0. Stephen Radford thinks it indicates dark mode (0) vs. light mode (1).
  • a (decimal). I’m pretty sure this is the angle of the sun over the horizon. 0º = sunset/sunrise. 90º = sun directly overhead. Negative values = sun below horizon.
  • z (decimal). This seems to be the cardinal position of the sun relative to the camera. 0º = sun is directly in front of the camera. 90º = sun is directly to the right of the camera. 180º = sun is directly behind the camera.

VSCode Remote: Connect to WSL2 from another machine

Do you want to do remote development on your WSL2 container in Visual Studio Code? Read this.

Proxy jump method

  1. On the host set up OpenSSH for Windows
  2. Run wsl --update to make sure you are running the latest WSL
  3. Open WSL and install another SSH server inside WSL with sudo apt-get install openssh-server
  4. Now run sudo systemctl enable --now ssh to automatically start ssh when WSL starts.
