Mod 1 Prework - Gear-up Assignment: Why Empathy?

Read

Read two of the following articles/videos (we recommend all of them!) and reflect on these questions: why are we talking about empathy at a software development school? how can you develop the "skill" of empathy? and why should you care?
  1. "Why is Empathy Important for Design"

Notes: Empathy makes better designers. Empathy increases understanding leading to better designs and better outcomes for both designers and users. It increases liklihood of avoiding assumptions. Spending time with users reveals how they would really use a design, which is more valuable feedback than asking questions.
  2. "The Surprising (Nontechnical) Skill You Need to Succeed in Tech", The Muse

Notes: Empathy is a skill that can be developed. Work on self-awareness. Work on giving and receiving feedback to minimize defensive reactions. Practice active listening - remove distractions and paraphrase what you heard when responding.
