Step-by-step Instructions to Setup an AWS ECS Cluster

Configuring AWS ECS to have access to AWS EFS

If you would like to persist data from your ECS containers, i.e. hosting databases like MySQL or MongoDB with Docker, you need to ensure that you can mount the data directory of the database in the container to volume that's not going to dissappear when your container or worse yet, the EC2 instance that hosts your containers, is restarted or scaled up or down for any reason.

Don't know how to create your own AWS ECS Cluster? Go here!

New Cluster

Sadly the EC2 provisioning process doesn't allow you to configure EFS during the initial config. After your create your cluster, follow the guide below.

New Task Definition for Web App

If you're using an Alpine-based Node server like duluca/minimal-node-web-server follow this guide:

Automatically backup a MongoDB database to S3 using mongodump, tar, and awscli (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS)
#!/bin/sh
# Make sure to:
# 1) Name this file `backup.sh` and place it in /home/ubuntu
# 2) Run sudo apt-get install awscli to install the AWSCLI
# 3) Run aws configure (enter s3-authorized IAM user and specify region)
# 4) Fill in DB host + name
# 5) Create S3 bucket for the backups and fill it in below (set a lifecycle rule to expire files older than X days in the bucket)
# 6) Run chmod +x backup.sh
# 7) Test it out via ./backup.sh

Event-stream based GraphQL subscriptions for real-time updates

In this gist I would like to describe an idea for GraphQL subscriptions. It was inspired by conversations about subscriptions in the GraphQL slack channel and different GH issues, like #89 and #411.

Conceptual Model

At the moment GraphQL allows 2 types of queries:

  • query
  • mutation

Reference implementation also adds the third type: subscription. It does not have any semantics yet, so here I would like to propose one possible semantics interpretation and the reasoning behind it.
