My schedule for the first week post Turing: Calendar

What motivates you?

Getting a job where I'm doing work I'm proud of in an environment where I'm treated with respect and that had good benefits.

How will you keep yourself going when faced with rejection in the job search?

Realization that it's about the long haul, and is a numbers game. The right thing will come my way eventually. Also, celebrating failure because that means the only way to go is up. Leveraging the support of friends seems like a smart thing to do, as well.

Section II

1) Why do you want mentoring in the job search?

I'd like a job before or around the time of graduation. I could use help with both the technical & behavioral aspects of interviewing, as I find them both difficult.

Takeaways

  • The only value in Javascript that is not equal to itself is NaN, because NaN means your computation is nonsensical, and a nonsensical computation cannot equal another nonsensical computation

  • Binding names can be any word and can include digits, ($), or (_), but cannot start with a digit

  • for loop structure:

      let result = 1;
      for (let counter = 0; counter < 10; counter = counter + 1) {
        result = result * 2;

Idea

Use NASA's near real time imagery (LANCE) to provide images on recent natural disasters. Provide a platform to connect people in need of services and supplies with the proper support as well as updated and accurate statistics on people, resources, and status of the natural disaster.

Tech Stack

Rails, Javascript, Postgres, Ruby

Outreach & Networking Plan As we've discussed, meeting people, forming relationships, and having conversations are the key pieces to getting your foot in the door at any company. It's important to be proactive in your approach to outreach and networking, so it's necessary to make a plan for what you'll try to further your networking.

Identify a contact you will reach out to by the end of this module. This could be a mentor, alum, or anyone from your current network. Describe:

Why you want to connect with this person and what you want to talk about

I want to connect with this person because they are an experienced, intelligent developer working for a prominent company. I'd enjoy chatting with them about how they got to where they're at and there is some crossover between what they're doing day to day and what I want to do.

Answers the questions => who are you? why are you here? what's next?

Growing up, I enjoying building things with my hands. My mom's bf ran a semi business and I often spent time fixing our family cars and working on the semi with him. I now own a motorcycle and enjoy working on it when I can. I found that building and working with my hands translates over to building software. I use some of the same processes in building apps that I did working with my hands. My last job was working in IT, and although I enjoyed some aspects, I often found the tasks manual, monotonous, and unchallenging. I was also a minority as the only female bodied person on the team. I was drawn to software engineering because I wanted to be able to automate all the manual, tedious tasks I had been assigned and help create software that would do that for other people. I also want to pave the way for other non-traditionally identifying types. I want them to feel like this is a type of role they should actively consider despite societal norms and expectations that might hold them back. My aim is to work at

Agile & Feedback Reflection Guidelines

What have you learned about the use of agile vs. waterfall in software projects?

Agile is much more effective for most situations. The only time you'd use the waterfall approach would be when testing is impossible, expensive, or dangerous. With agile, you're able to constantly get feedback from the customers and modify the product based on that feedback, which guarantees a product people are actually going to use.

How did you and your group approach project management in this project (what tools did you use, how did you hold each other accountable, etc.)?

We merged together in person whenever possible and pulled from master in person, as well. We mainainted our own group in slack and used it and consistent in person contact to communicate constantly about the project. We split things up originally, realized that wasn't working, came back together and that ended up working much more efficiently.
