How to use rails load paths, app, and lib directories.

In Rails 3

NOTE: This post now lives (and kept up to date) on my blog: http://hakunin.com/rails3-load-paths

If you add a dir directly under app/

Do nothing. All files in this dir are eager loaded in production and lazy loaded in development by default.

If you add a dir under app/something/

Personal notes on FullCalendar tuning

FullCalendar tuning

Goal of this short guide is to show solution process which will allow for FullCalendar to render clickable day numbers. Every such link will point to that day's summary page, listing all events for that particular day. If the day has no events, there will be no link.

Step 0: plan everything

By default, FullCalendar does not provide any helpful classes which will allow us to find cells containing events. We have to dive into documentation to find out.

Reading docs, we can pinpoint main points for customization, namely:

Generates objects for use with Savon. Uses Action Model (ServiceBase) to provide validations and attributes access, but can be easily adapted to Struct / OpenStruct if needed.
module MyModule
# Regenerating code
end unless __FILE__ == $0
if __FILE__ == $0
require 'savon'
split_on = "#" + " Regenerating code"
code = File.read(__FILE__).split(split_on).last
wsdl_file_path = File.join(File.dirname(__FILE__), ARGV.first || raise("Gimme file!"))

Prefix key

The default prefix is C-b. If you (or your muscle memory) prefer C-a, you need to add this to ~/.tmux.conf:

remap prefix to Control + a

Check whether a Paperclip attachment exists

Check whether a Paperclip attachment exists

Don’t simply test for the presence of the magic Paperclip attribute, it will return a paperclip Attachment object and thus always be true:

- if user.photo.present? # always true
  = image_tag(user.photo.url)

How to recover a git branch you accidentally deleted

UPDATE: A better way! (August 2015)

As pointed out by @johntyree in the comments, using git reflog is easier and more reliable. Thanks for the suggestion!

 $ git reflog
1ed7510 HEAD@{1}: checkout: moving from develop to 1ed7510
3970d09 HEAD@{2}: checkout: moving from b-fix-build to develop
1ed7510 HEAD@{3}: commit: got everything working the way I want
70b3696 HEAD@{4}: commit: upgrade rails, do some refactoring
