Compiler Optimizations, Compiling Optimally, and Whole Modules

DEPRECATED for Xcode 10 🎈

(check out What's New in Swift at 11:40, slide 42)

Whole Module Compilation Optimizations: Why these terms are sometimes misleading

When you look up how to compile swift faster for debug builds, people very earnestly give advice that seems contradictory: you should "try using the whole module optimization flag," and also "never use whole module optimization for debugging". [^1]

This is confusing because some of us are using these two general words:

compilation: "turning text into an executable program"

Swift Evolution - Enum Case Count Functionality

Swift Evolution Proposal

Author: Andyy Hope

Enum Values() Functionality (Update)

It has been brought to my attention that there was more use for the unintended values() functionality that I had outline in my "Other Languages" Java example below.

On the Swift Evolution mailing list, one developer outlined their requirement to loop through an array of enum case values to add different states to objects.

Another example where a values array would be useful if the developer wants to do something different for each different case, such as setting an image on a UIButton subclass for each different UIControlState

My thoughts on MessagePack

My thoughts on MessagePack

Hi. My name is Sadayuki "Sada" Furuhashi. I am the author of the MessagePack serialization format as well as its implementation in C/C++/Ruby.

Recently, MessagePack made it to the front page of Hacker News with this blog entry by Olaf, the creator of the Facebook game ZeroPilot. In the comment thread, there were several criticisms for the blog post as well as MessagePack itself, and I thought this was a good opportunity for me to address the questions and share my thoughts.

My high-level response to the comments

To the best of my understanding, roughly speaking, the criticisms fell into the following two categories.
