Name: Pierce Alworth Partner: Steve Anderson Project Reflection

  • What is one thing that went unusually well during this project?
    • There are a few days where Steve and I really got in the zone and were able do some quality work. I thought Steve and I worked together well and were able to solve problems as a team effectively.
  • In hindsight, is there anything you would have done differently?
    • I think we would have benefited from planning out the work at the beginning of this project. Our working styles are both more on the fly planning, so although it would have been uncomfortable to try and follow a ridged schedule it could have benefited us.
  • If you were working with this partner again, what is something that you would want to focus on improving as a team?
    • I thought we had a lot of strengths as partners but like I said above, more planning and delegation would have benefited us. Feedback for your partner
ACT 1
I grew on a small farm in Western Minnesota. As child, I would follow my dad around the farm
and watch as he tended to the horses, fixed the tractors, and plowed the fields. I would pretend
I was helping him out, but soon enough that became a reality. Once my feet were long enough to touch
pedals on the tractor I was expected to be working. Long days on the farm taught me the importance of
prioritization and effective problem solving. Making a mistake once is expected, but we plain and simple
couldn’t afford to make the same mistake twice.
In the later years of my adolescence I began to run into problems on the farm for which I did
not have any solutions. Our horses had a very specific and intense exercise regiment. A few times

What is your greatest strength and how do you know?

My greatest strength is my ability to learn from my mistakes. Although the Pairin gauge this, I have found this out through the trials of my life. I know that this a strength of mine because it is a skill that transends my specific strengths from specialized activities and applies to all parts of my life. When I was playing polo professionally, I would never let another player beat me the same way twice, or my horse get away with the same bad activity twice. I believe the best way for me to learn is trial by fire, when I mess something up I am able to internalize my mistakes more seriously.

How do you work best?

I work best in a group or with other people. When I am working through a problem is it very productive for me to talk through my logic with somebody and hear an outside opinion.

What role does empathy play in your life and how has it helped you? Empathy has been an important throughout my life and will continue to do so. Empathy has first and foremost helped me build relationships. I have lived quite a nomadic lifestyle in the past 6 years of my life. A lot of picking up and moving. Whenver I have found myself in a new enviroment, be that South Carolina or Cambodia, I have always tried to make firends based on similarities. Not similarities in lifestyle, race, or any other socially defining way, but similar experinces and sentiements in life. I connect with people a lot better when I think of what we have in common, what we agree on, and what experinces define me and others. Through this lens, I have made many long lasting friendships with people who seem to live a very different life than me. Empathy helps me fit into the world and at the same time makes the world seem fit my understanding of things.

What role does empathy play in your life and how has it helped you?

I think that empathy is nessesary to living a productive and happy life. Empathy allows us to be open and encourage others to be open as well. This is important in a professional setting because it will help you convice other to be open to new idea. That is especially true when collaboratively working on a project. It has helped me in my life because it has opened me up to more oppertunities. The more I empathize with someone else, the more I find myself being open to thier ideas.

How does empathy help you build better software?

Empathy is very important while building software because programmers will work on projects collaboratively. The more we understand where each other are coming from, in terms of ideas, moods, and motivations, the better a team can build a product. Team work means understanding each others strengths and weaknesses and using that knowladge effectively. Empathy allows programmers to be more constructive when try
