Compiling Realtek 8152, 8156 and 8157 ( RTL8152 ) drivers for QNAP NAS

Compiling Realtek RTL 8152, 8156 and 8157 drivers for QNAP NAS

Note

This guide was last updated on 17th Feb 2025

Many QNAP NAS devices only come with 1Gbe network interfaces. These devices can easily benefit from a simple network upgrade by connecting the ubiquitious 2.5Gbe USB NICs from Realtek. Unfortunately, some of the older QNAP NAS systems do not support the newer r8156 based 2.5Gbe NICs or r8157 based 5Gbe NICs as they run an older 4.x linux kernel and the r8152 source files included with the older linux kernel are based off an older codebase that predates the 8156/8157 series.

With some elbow grease however, we can build support for the 2.5 & 5 Gbe adapters and easily upgrade functionality.

This tutorial shows how to run docker natively on Android, without VMs and chroot.

Docker on Android 🐋📱

Edit 🎉

All packages, except for Tini have been added to termux-root. To install them, simply pkg install root-repo && pkg install docker. This will install the whole docker suite, left only Tini to be compiled manually.

A tutorial to use GUI in WSL2 replacing original XServer by Xvnc, allowing WSL to work like native Linux, including login screen

WSL2 with GUI using Xvnc

Note

If you want to use pure WSLg, you can try the new WSLg (XWayland) tutorial or the WSLg (Wayland) tutorial.

In this tutorial, we will setup GUI in WSL2, and access it using VNC. No additional software outside WSL (like VcXsrv) is required, except, of course, a VNC Viewer (RealVNC, TightVNC, TigerVNC, UVNC, etc, all of them might work flawlessly).

The key component we need to install is the desktop metapackage you want (GNOME, KDE, Xfce, Budgie, etc) and tigervnc-standalone-server.

For this setup, I will use Ubuntu (20.04, 22.04 and 24.04 are working), and install GNOME Desktop. Since the key components aren't bound to Ubuntu or GNOME, you can use your favorite distro and GUI. Check the [Sample

Enable High Quality mode on your headphones (Updated for macOS Catalina)

If you're using a high-end bluetooth headset on your Macbook Pro it's likely your mac is using an audio codec which favors battery efficiency over high quality. This results in a drastic degradation of sound, the SBC codec is the likely culprit, read more about it here.

Find out what codec you're using

  1. Play a song on your headphones
  2. Option (⌥) click the Bluetooth button at the top of your screen Inspect the Bluetooth Coded
  3. If you're using AAC or aptX, you can stop here—those are the highest quality codecs.

Change your codec to AAC or aptX

Using cec-client on a Raspberry Pi to control TV power and inputs via HDMI

Using cec-client on a Raspberry Pi

Most modern HDMI connected devices support Consumer Electronics Control (CEC). It allows devices to send commands to each other, typically to get the TV to switch input and control volume. If you have ever turned on a Game Console and had your TV automatically change input to that device you have seen CEC in action. It is very convenient and useful, sort of a universal remote that works.

Every manufacturer seems to have it’s own branding of CEC (e.g. Samsung Anynet+, LG SimpLink, Sharp Aquos Link) but it may need to be enabled. Check your manual for details.

Using a Raspberry Pi connected to a TV that supports CEC, you can use the command line cec-client application to control the inputs and the TV itself. These are notes on how to use cec-client and understand the different options.
