Segui o http://localtechrepair.blogspot.com/2011/05/ubuntu-1104-crash-after-upgrade-or.html, mas tive que baixar o source, então foi isso que fiz:

Entra com o antigo na tela inicial (versões anteriores...) pra baixar o driver, http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us, aqui vc escolhe o driver pra baixar. Guarda no home, pra ficar mais fácil depois.

Reinicia e entra como modo de segurança (da versão nova mesmo), resume boot, faz login, aí digita esses comandos:

sudo su
apt-get purge nvidia-*
vim /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf #aqui pode ser outro editor de texto, é so pra alterar o arquivo.
Adiciona essas linhas no arquivo, salva e sai:
