General Rules

• Commit messages must have a subject line and may have body copy. These must be separated by a blank line.
• The subject line must not exceed 50 characters
• The subject line should be capitalized and must not end in a period
• The subject line must be written in imperative mood (Fix, not Fixed / Fixes etc.)
• The body copy must be wrapped at 72 columns
• The body copy must only contain explanations as to what and why, never how. The latter belongs in documentation and implementation.

Installing gcc 4.8 and Linuxbrew on CentOS 6

The GCC distributed with CentOS 6 is 4.4.7, which is pretty outdated. I'd like to use gcc 4.8+. Also, when trying to install Linuxbrew you run into a dependency loop where Homebrew's gcc depends on zlib, which depends on gcc. Here's how I solved the problem.

setProps - depends on reading the last reconciled props from the current reconciled state of the app, at the time of the call. It also depends on an object that doesn't necessarily need to be there outside reconciliation. This is unlike setState, which is state that needs to be there. setState is queued up and merged at the time of reconciliation. Not at the time of the call. setState has a side-effect but is not a stateful nor mutative API.

isMounted - reads the current state of the tree, which may be stale if you're in a batch or reconciliation.

getDOMNode/findDOMNode - Reads the currently flushed node. This currently relies on the state of the system and that everything has flushed at this time. We could potentially do a forced render but that would still rely on the state of the system allowing us to synchronously being able to force a rerender of the system. Note: in 0.14, refs directly to DOM node will resolve to the DOM node. This allow you to get access to a node at the time of its choos

Installing Ubuntu on a Mac

Desktop linux has been late to the show with high dpi support, but gnome seems to be leading the pack. I decided to try again. It's worked fairly well out of the box. Here are my steps if anyone wishes to repeat.

Booting into Ubuntu Live Image

• Download the iso from http://ubuntugnome.org/ubuntu-gnome-14-10-is-released/

• Insert usb stick, umount using diskutil and dd the image. (make sure to use the right devices when using dd, your setup may vary)

New React Element Factories and JSX

In React 0.12, we're making a core change to how React.createClass(...) and JSX works.

If you're using JSX in the typical way for all (and only) React components, then this transition will be seamless. Otherwise there are some minor breaking changes described below.
