Get the share counts from various APIs

Share Counts

I have always struggled with getting all the various share buttons from Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, Pinterest, etc to align correctly and to not look like a tacky explosion of buttons. Seeing a number of sites rolling their own share buttons with counts, for example The Next Web I decided to look into the various APIs on how to simply return the share count.

If you want to roll up all of these into a single jQuery plugin check out Sharrre

Many of these API calls and methods are undocumented, so anticipate that they will change in the future. Also, if you are planning on rolling these out across a site I would recommend creating a simple endpoint that periodically caches results from all of the APIs so that you are not overloading the services will requests.

JavaScript To Convert Bytes To MB, KB, Etc
// from http://scratch99.com/web-development/javascript/convert-bytes-to-mb-kb/

var sizes = ['Bytes', 'KB', 'MB', 'GB', 'TB'];
if (bytes == 0) return 'n/a';
var i = parseInt(Math.floor(Math.log(bytes) / Math.log(1024)));
if (i == 0) return bytes + ' ' + sizes[i];
return (bytes / Math.pow(1024, i)).toFixed(1) + ' ' + sizes[i];
};

A recursive sorta-version of wp_parse_args()
<?php
/**
* Recursive argument parsing
*
* This acts like a multi-dimensional version of wp_parse_args() (minus
* the querystring parsing - you must pass arrays).
*
* Values from $a override those from $b; keys in $b that don't exist
* in $a are passed through.

Quick check to determine if a WordPress post exists using the post_name (slug) and post_type (defaults to 'post'). Returns the post ID if found, or 0 (zero) if not found.

PHP mock ArrayAccess / Iterator / Countable. Using Phpunit with Mockery. TestCase for simple mocking classes that implements ArrayAccess, Iterator or Countable. Just create mock and call in your test: $this->mockArrayIterator($mock, $array);Notice that if you mock an interface that extends Iterator, Mockery will fail due to bug at https://github…
<?php
abstract class TestCase extends \PHPUnit_Framework_TestCase
{
protected function tearDown()
{
parent::tearDown();
\Mockery::close();
}

In WordPress, get current URL including query string
<?php
/**
Re-use some existing WordPress functions so you don't have to write a bunch of raw PHP to check for SSL, port numbers, etc
Place in your functions.php (or re-use in a plugin)
If you absolutely don't need or want any query string, use home_url(add_query_arg(array(),$wp->request));
