#1.	Why are you interested in programming? What have you done to expose yourself to programming so far?

I’m interested in programming because I have a passion for tech, creativity, and finding solutions. I love the mental challenge that programming presents and the possibility of being able to conceive a new idea and bring it to fruition. My first exposure to programming was 4-5 years ago when I started teaching myself basic html/css to create themes for blogs of mine. I tried teaching myself python to see if I could learn more difficult languages, and I was able to learn the basics. During my junior year of college I took one class that taught introductory level C# in visual studio. Although I wasn’t able to take any other programing classes, that class was beneficial to me because it proved to me that I would greatly benefit from learning programing techniques in a collaborative classroom setting.


# 2.	What are your professional goals for the next 2 years, the next 5 years?
 
Over the next 2 years, my goal is to make a career shift from marketing to software development and gain an understanding of how the industry operates. I’d first like to gain a thorough fluency in fundamental programing languages (like Java), and then get work experience as a software developer in the Seattle area. 

Over the next 5 years, I plan to leverage my background in marketing and software development to pursue a career in UI and/or UX or gaming. Currently, I have a strong interest in working at Tableau or Slack. Working with youth has always been a passion of mine, so on the side, I’d also like to somehow get involved with programs that teach girls and young women about the benefits of learning programming.


#3.	Tell us about a time you made a mistake that you learned a lot from. If you encountered the situation again, what would you do differently?

When I was first hired on at my current place of employment as a marketing intern, I managed a Facebook Ad project. My role in that project was to serve as a liaison between our contracted social media agency and various department project managers who were requesting Facebook Ads. In one instance, I made the mistake of letting one program manager dictate so much of the ad creation process that it delayed the launch of the ads and hindered the success of her campaign. With the help of my manager, we were able to get the campaign back on track while maintaining good relations with all parties involved; but the most valuable thing I learned from this mistake was the importance of communication, specifically in regards to setting expectations, identifying goals, and agreeing on outcomes in the workplace. Were I to encounter this situation again, I would have first had a meeting with the PM to get a clear picture of her vision for the campaign and then communicated the importance of trusting our contracted social media professionals. 


#4.	Have you taught yourself anything before? Describe what you learned and how you approached it.

During my time as a student office assistant, I had to teach myself how to use an application called the Student Database System (SDB). The database was created in the 70’s and hasn’t been updated since, so learning how to use lines of command to navigate screens and retrieve pertinent data wasn’t as intuitive as using a program with a modern, familiar interface. 

My approach to teaching myself all of these things was very similar to how I learn new things in general (such as coding languages); I first sought out basic information, which in this case came in the form of a torn booklet that had a shortlist of codes used to call various screens. I then tested my ability to implement what I learned by trying to enter codes and seeing what happened. If I ran into issues I would either try to find more information and/or ask my co-workers for their input. Once I started getting the hang of the simple operations, I would push further into more complicated things. I knew I had thoroughly learned how to use the database once I felt confident in my ability to teach other people how to use it.
