Reflection on 4 Years of Newpath

I originally joined the group to “get an internship” as a friend recommended that internships were the #1 thing I needed to get a job after college. While I haven’t gotten an internship or job directly from the group it has directly affected how I approach business, software development and my career. Specifically, causing me to focus on the following points when evaluating every idea and plan going forward. (Below are some of the major points I’ve taken to heart and the individual whom I attribute to driving the home)

  1. When developing an idea or product TALK WITH OTHERS. Specifically, get user feedback as soon as possible! It’ll allow you to develop the product users need and want in the shortest possible time. – Columbus Startup Weekend Crew

  2. Quantify the minim viable product (MVP) as the smallest possible buildable unit which meets the feature set defined in #1.

  3. Accept that you’ll going to need help! And that you cannot learn everything. :’(

    • Specifically, “Choose something to specialize in and for everything else pick a point at which you’ll be content that you know enough” – Scott Hanselman (@shanselman)
    • And the classic “learn something new every day” and “always be learning something”
  4. If you don’t know an answer. 1st understand the problem (ACTUALLY understand the problem). Then spend the time to search for the answer. e.g. Google is your best friend! – Debugging sessions…

  5. Domain experience and an actual understanding of the problem are irreplaceable – Dirty Dish Team

  6. Fake it until you make it – Brandon Mills (mainly for your last minute, but still stellar, Newpath talks)

  7. You’re always networking – Zach Boerger

  8. Do what you enjoy – Paul Tela

  9. How do disparate technologies relate? Understanding one technology allows you to recognize what you’ll be looking for in another – Claudius Mbemba

  10. Try to avoid feature creep as much as possible although it’s a difficult battle. Reprioritize with #1 and learn to say “no” – MVP, agile and Cisco Team

  11. Make demoes interactive, exciting and understandable – Jeff Becker

Thanks for everything! I hope to meet, work and hangout with everyone again in the future.
