Things to remind myself about the Highway Code
break for 15+ minutes every 2 hours
limit on towing weight
do not use horn when stationary or 11:30pm-7am in built-up area
sidelights and rear registration must be lit half an hour either side of sunset/sunrise
headlights must be lit at night unless there are streetlights
when stationary, apply the parking brake and release the foot brake to reduce dazzle
use dipped headlights in daytime, built-up areas, overtaking until level
hazard warning lights should be used at night in built-up areas, or dull daytime
start/stop braking lightly, for safety
try to avoid wheellock in emergency brake
release brake, ease off accelerator and turn into skids
test brakes after deep water
coasting reduces vehicle control due to lack of engine braking, wearing footbrake
don't leave vehicles running unnecessarily when stationary
cars must not exceed 60mph on single carriageways, 70 on dual and motorways
allow 2 second gap between vehicle ahead, more in hazardous conditions
can overtake on double white line if vehicle at <10mph
white studs mark middle lanes, red the left edge, amber the central reservation, green the edge of slip roads, green/yellow temporary changes
use mirrors and check blind spot before signalling
stay in left or middle lanes except when overtaking or turning right
don't drive or park in cycle lanes
don't drive in bus lanes when operational
obey car pool lanes
drive safely, with due care and attention and respect for other road users
don't drive on pavement except to access property
adjust speed as precaution on bends etc
anticipate pedestrians
don't throw things out a vehicle
avoid loud music, map reading, tuning stereo, arguing, eating, drinking, smoking
don't use a mobile phone, hands-free is legal but unsafe
don't block side roads when queuing
don't undertake unless vehicle is turning right
reduce speed for traffic-calming
give way to vehicles coming uphill on single-lane roads
drop back from large vehicles to see in front for overtaking
don't overtake without a clear view of the road and enough legal space to overtake
you must stop at a stop sign
you can enter box junctions (criss-crossed yellow lines) to wait a turn if your entry is free
when waiting to turn right, stop just to the left of the median, try to give room for passing
when two cars are turning across each other at a junction, try to turn behind for visibility
roundabout exists: 1st left lane and left left signal, 2nd don't signal until before it, 3rd/4th right lane and signal/move across before it
don't stop on level crossings
zebra crossings - give way to pedestrians waiting to cross
pelican crossings - push button to cross, can drive on if amber and no pedestrians
puffin crossings - push button to cross, cross signal on your side
toucan crossings - push button to cross, cyclists and pedestrians
don't reverse into a junction, reverse in and drive out of driveways if possible
focus on the rear window when reversing, being careful of other mirrors and swinging out
where safe, pull to the side to let emergency vehicles past
use headlights when visibility reduced below 100m, turn off fog lights when visibility improves
in ice, drive slowly in as high a gear as possible. check braking regularly.
check mirrors before using brakes in dangerous conditions.
must not stop on a pedestrian crossing, taxi bays, roads with double white lines (except for pickup), cycle lanes, etc
use only parking spaces not reserved for disabled, motorcycles etc
must not leave vehicle in dangerous position
do not stop within 10m of a junction except in a parking space, on a bend or in front of an entrance
do not park on pavement unless outside London and where signs permit
turn steering wheel away from kerb uphill, away from kerb downhill
do not pass flashing red signals on a motorway, unless above a different lane
if broken down, use hazard warning lights if obstructing. unless on motorways, put a warning triangle on the road 45m back.
if stuck on a carriageway, only leave your vehicle when you can safely get clear
Don't try to remove obstructions from motorways. Ring the police/HA.
Don't move injured people to remove helmets unless essential
Stay at scene of accidents until services arrive
Things in red circles prohibit it - eg bicycle in red circle means NO BICYCLES
Things in red triangles warn of it
R in yellow-bordered green rectangle means ring road
Presence of street lights implies 30mph, unless an area made it 20mph
Blue circles with speed is minimum speed. Crossed sign ends the zone.
Never stop on a clearway except to set-down.
Red crossed circle on blue background says waiting restrictions.
Can park on the right on a one-way road.
Can overtake on either side of a one-way road.
Use parking lights when on a 40mph+ road.
Diagonal red lines indicate a concealed level crossing.
Speed limit is 10mph lower with a trailer.
Broken white lines on cycle lanes mean you can drive/park if unavoidable.
Red circles give orders.
End of restricted parking signs are the ones without a speed in.
Red circles with diagonal crosses and a blue background mean no parking.
Red circles with a black arrow and red arrow mean the black has priority.
Blue circles give a positive instruction.
Bicycle in triangle warns of cycle route ahead.
Green-amber-red-red/amber-green. Don't go except when green.
A dotted midline with short gaps indicates a hazard.
Hand out of window turning in circle means turning left.
Hand out of window waving forward-and-back means slowing down.
Numbers in black boxes on motorway signs give junction numbers.
Follow shapes on yellow backgrounds for a diversion.
White horizontal lines in traffic lights tell trams to stop.
Give-way triangles point downwards.
Warning of traffic going both direction signs appear on one-way roads.
Warning of traffic both ways indicates end of one-way.
A single white line at the edge just indicates the edge of the carriageway.
Check breathing for 10 seconds, cool burns for 10 minutes. Chest compressions 4-5cm at 100/minute. Breathe in gently.
Shock signs are rapid pulse, sweating, pale grey skin and rapid shallow breathing.
