You can make howManyEqual without case:
howManyEqual(A, A, A) -> 3;
howManyEqual(_, A, A) -> 2;
howManyEqual(A, _, A) -> 2;
howManyEqual(A, A, _) -> 2;
howManyEqual(_, _, _) -> 0.
