there is a dream. dream of universal access to knowledge for every member of society. dreams rarely come true but this particular one: universal access to knowledge for every member of society got embodied into: public library!

before internet public library was struggling with the promise saying all of the knowledge and about is it really every member of society.

still people were keen to support the dream. in every country of the world. capitalis. socialist. communist. offshore. you name it.

internet. Internet as in many other instances, has overturned what we take as given and as possible. The dream of all people getting access to all knowledge suddenly came within our reach. It seemed just an issue of interpreting when the trajectory curves of global personal computer distribution and internet access penetration would finally make universal access to knowledge a reality. However, the actual trajectory of development of public libraries in the age of internet are pointing in the opposite direction – that the phenomena we people are most proud of are being undercut and can easily go extinct.

public library is about to disappear. public library has no access to digital books and it loses financial support, as they always say, because of the economic crisis.

ok. let's go back to the dream: what is public library?

1. universal access to books for every member of society

librariaship was useful. it automatized and systematized knowledge about cataloging that we have easy to use tools for amateurs. and that's calibre.

with one click you get metadata (from internet).

pick up one metadata if there are more candidates.

by doing this one becomes an amateur librarian. she makes a catalog. have access to her books but, back to the dream, she should move in direction to universal access to knowledge for every member of society.

if many librarians do that we can say:

everyone is a librarian and if everyone is librarian library is everywhere.

yay!

but it would be great if then we can search through all of the libraries shared by many librarians at any given moment making a big distibuted peer to peer librarry. ta daaaam!

they take care about getting it. from amazon. for you. without drm. for money. for less then a dollar. per book.

and then. what about the books which are not on libgen.org, aaaaarg.org, ubu.com, monoskop. ebookoid. what about the books. the real books.

scanner. we scan. 15 minutes of taking photos. then preparing it for ocr and pdfing. from 20 minutes to 60 minutes. per book. a lot of labour before we make our dream comes true: universal access to knowledge for every member of society.
