Public Library fairytale

there is a dream. dream of universal access to knowledge for every member of society. dreams rarely come true but this particular one: universal access to knowledge for every member of society got embodied into: public library!

before internet public library was struggling with the promise saying all of the knowledge and about is it really every member of society.

still people were keen to support the dream. in every country of the world. capitalis. socialist. communist. offshore. you name it.

internet. Internet as in many other instances, has overturned what we take as given and as possible. The dream of all people getting access to all knowledge suddenly came within our reach. It seemed just an issue of interpreting when the trajectory curves of global personal computer distribution and internet access penetration would finally make universal access to knowledge a reality. However, the actual trajectory of development of public libraries in the age of internet are pointing in the opposite direction – that the phenomena we people are most proud of are being undercut and can easily go extinct.

public library is about to disappear. public library has no access to digital books and it loses financial support, as they always say, because of the economic crisis.

ok. let's go back to the dream: what is public library?

  1. universal access to books for every member of society
  2. catalog
  3. librarian

slide 3:

librariaship was useful. it automatized and systematized knowledge about cataloging that we have easy to use tools for amateurs. and that's calibre.

you select the book and import it into calibre.

slide 4:

with one click you get metadata (from internet).

slide 5:

pick up one metadata if there are more candidates.

by doing this one becomes an amateur librarian. she makes a catalog. have access to her books but, back to the dream, she should move in direction to universal access to knowledge for every member of society.

so how librarian shares the catalog and the books with the world. nothing easier. one click

this is [let's share books] calibre plugin. click on [start sharing]

slide 7:

connecting to internet. find the memory of the world.org server

slide 8:

get temporary public url like this one www43077.memoryoftheworld.org this url one can share with the world. and world gets access to the catalog and the books.

if many librarians do that we can say:

everyone is a librarian and if everyone is librarian library is everywhere.

yay!

but it would be great if then we can search through all of the libraries shared by many librarians at any given moment making a big distibuted peer to peer librarry. ta daaaam!

slide 9:

https://library.memoryoftheworld.org search, find the librarians, chat with them at https://chat.memoryoftheworld.org, find the book, import it directly to your own calibre because what we want is end-to-end catalog where no book ever leave the catalog.

so where today's librarians, researchers, avid readers go for the books:

slide 10:

libgren.org million of books.

slide 11:

aaaaarg.org where thousands researchers hang out, collect, make collections like: A Genealogy of Bibliographies, A citizens unconditional basic income, Art and Performance, Public Space, Public Sphere, Queer Theology and the Performing Body, Fairy Tales, Fluxus, feminist spatial reasoning, Perspectives on Perspective , Post-War Marxian Economics... and many others

slide 12:

ubu.com - beautiful

slide 13:

http://i.imgur.com/6yUpXo1.png

monoskop.org - beautiful check it out.

slide 14:

http://i.imgur.com/rEx38cj.png

but then again. what about books which are not already at libgen.org, aaaaarg.org, ubu.com, monoskop.

slide 15:

ebookoid.com (for many controversial). you pay. one cent. seventynine cents. ninetynine cents. never more. they cover crowdfunding. you select the book at amazon put it into your whishlist.

they take care about getting it. from amazon. for you. without drm. for money. for less then a dollar. per book.

and then. what about the books which are not on libgen.org, aaaaarg.org, ubu.com, monoskop. ebookoid. what about the books. the real books.

slide 16:

scanner. we scan. 15 minutes of taking photos. then preparing it for ocr and pdfing. from 20 minutes to 60 minutes. per book. a lot of labour before we make our dream comes true: universal access to knowledge for every member of society.
