Extra steps to run multiple websites on one ec2 box.
I don't know why bitnami is slow to start my wordpress site (on first load) / godaddy works fine.
These extroneous steps took more than day of faffing around, but site is working fast.
N.B. cloudcformation template script has been updated to specify ec2-user not root / suitable for AMI images.
N.B. ubuntu doesn't allow you to adjust cpu down the track so go AMI out of the box.
I took some extra steps to get nginx running to allow multiple sites on same box
attention to
DocumentRoot "/var/www/html/wordpress" to avoid the wordpress subdirectory listing otherwise you have this cooky /wordpress subdirectory you need to navigate to.
WARNING - LESSONS LEARNED ALONG THE WAY
if you set up wordpress by confirming the database username / password on initial launch USING the http://yourwebsite/wordpress URL
- your install is no good - you'll need to blow it away and start again.
update the httpd.conf to point to "/var/www/html/wordpress" - start and stop website using
sudo service httpd stop
sudo service httpd start
FIX THIS - OTHERWISE PERMISSION ISSUES WHEN FTP'ing to site
sudo usermod -a -G apache ec2-user
sudo chown -R apache:ec2-user /var/www/html
WARNING -
if you access your wordpress site from the url that cloudformation spits out eg.
http://eight-appli-1y2gafn53i3r-asfasdf.ap-southeast-2.elb.amazonaws.com/
then it seems to tie the site to that domain so clicking links to edit pages defaults back to this ( I'm yet to dive under the hood of mysql database to rectify this) I'd recommend pointing your dns to the domain / public ip of load balancer first.
TO RUN MULTIPLE WEBSITES - easiest in my opinion to use nginx to help.
You can install using ansible playbook / ssh into box / then add new config files to sites-available / sites-enabled.
sample below. I had good mileage using this https://github.com/geerlingguy/ansible-role-nginx
Neat thing with nginx is - there's a simple config file to host many different sites - to get things running on multiple ports -
