Prepare for Job Shadow: AEIOU
Activities: what questions do you have about the activities that a software developer does on a daily basis?
- What are some of the more interesting problems you have to solve or balance on a daily basis?
Environment: what questions do you have about the overall environment and culture of this workplace?
- How does the culture on the Dev team compare to the culture at Frontier?
Interactions: what questions do you have about the team at this company? What do you hope to see in your interactions during the shadow?
- I want to learn about how priorities are determined and communicated.
Intermission Reflection: Please list the top 3-5 industries and companies you'll pursue in your job search as of right now.
Ecommerce
Enviromental Markets
Fintech
Why did you pick the industries/companies that you listed above? How do they relate to the values and goals you have for yourself in your job search?
To me industry is far less important than learning to work at scale. It could be for VM ware or Shopify, they are different industries but both work on a massive scale. That is what I want to learn.
How does your LinkedIn currently reflect your goals and industry interests? What changes will you need to make to your LinkedIn to better reflect these?
Back to your resume and cover letter you've been working on:
What other next steps do you want to take to make these two components stronger?
- I've added projects now that I have a couple of things I am proud to have built. I want to continue to flesh those projects out so I can speak to a few more technologies and have a stronger portfolio.
Outreach Brainstorming:
Either explore the company you wrote a cover letter for or find a new company to explore this week; Go to their company LinkedIn page and start to explore the employees. Who are a couple people you could reach out to? Why?
I've reached out to a few Turing alumni. Two have not responded but one did and we had a 15 conversation evolve into a very helpful hour. The people I have tried to contact are
- Ryan Bahan at Shopify
- Jean Joeris at Drizly
Find a position or use a position you've put on your Huntr board and write a cover letter for that position in a Google doc or gist. Reference these cover letter resources as well as the session to complete your cover letter.
Post the link to your cover letter here
- For Invoca, where I knew a contact https://docs.google.com/document/d/1TZ8yFWfu5heSu5r6SZ9XmByBsaoefeoqBY0u5J2702w/edit
- For Guild Education, cold contact https://docs.google.com/document/d/1fGH65GiVaOBfMtWV6mmwzMeDHoJoMc-K_SeT-GOgmoI/edit
Review your cover letter with a peer some time this week. What feedback did your partner give you? What next steps will you take to make your cover letter even stronger?
- Feedback was very positive. I wasn't given much in the way of actionable steps.
Refine your career vision: What are the values that will drive your job search? What are your goals for your job search? What kind of role do you see yourself pursuing in your job search? Based on your latest version of your career vision, list the top 3-5 industries and companies you’ll pursue in your job search as of right now. Why did you pick these industries/companies? How do they relate to the values and goals you have for yourself in your job search?
I care less about the industry itself than the scale of the shop. There are so many things that can only be practiced at scale. Canidates that I have identified so far are Shopify, Twilio, Crunchbase, Soundcloud and Twitch
Authentication / Authorization
Write up some notes and ideas on the following:
you need to store a user in a database table; what do we need to know about them (ie, email, password)
- Depending on what interaction we want to have with our users it could be as simple as an email and password or extend to address and other contact or identifying information.
how can we store a password in a secure way (ie, if our database is compromised, how can we protect their passwords from prying eyes)
- We can use salting, the technique of adding a random string before hashing that only the company knows.
how would we store the idea of what a user is allowed to do on a web site
Review your habit tracker: how did you monitor your habit(s)? What does this tell you about your overall progress becoming the person you want to be? In general, how satisfied are you with how you spent your time this module? What could be improved next module?
Mind Maps:
i. Engagement. What did you reflect on last week in regards to when you’re engaged in your work at Turing? Pull out an idea that resonates with you most (e.g., “Talking through a problem with a partner,” “The moment when I solve a problem that I previously didn’t know how to do,” “Setting up a successful project management process for my team”) and break that idea down into parts and make a list (what are all the steps that go into that moment? When do you get to use your strengths? What is fun about this?).
- I find the intial design phase to be a lot of fun. Combining ideas and understanding among the team to come up with the most elegent solution to a problem.
ii. Energy. What did you reflect on last week in regards to when you feel mo
Prepare for Job Experience: AEIOU
Activities: what questions do you have about the activities that a software developer does on a daily basis?
- What is the communication flow like between your team? Is it singl/mulit channel and how responsive are you expected to be?
Environment: what questions do you have about the overall environment and culture of this workplace?
- If you are remote do you plan on going back to the office anytime in the near future?
Interactions: what questions do you have about the team at this company? What do you hope to learn during this experience?
- What is the size of team you work on and is that normal for you company? What does mentorship look like on this team?
Assess your habits from week 2: how did you spend your time this past week? What was effective in your habits? What could be more effective? What steps will you take to make that happen?
I would say 70% of the time I tried to apply towards work was effective. When the weather gets colder and I dont have a chance to get out during the day I struggle to stay focused when I have been sitting for several days. I try to incorperate small exercise routines during the day but it gets hard when the project load is high. For small sprints its more of a hold my breath to the other side practice.
Reflect on how you’ve spent your time so far at Turing to gauge your engagement and energy:
It ebbs and it flows.
When have you been excited, focused, and enjoyed your work? When have you felt bored, restless, or unhappy? When do you feel energized in your work? When is your energy drained?
I really enjoy the instruction and material this mod. It is at times a lot to take in and I feel like I lack a deep understanding
