Tweet This Toot Bookmarklet

A browser bookmarklet to manually transfer Mastodon posts to Twitter. Also a bookmarklet to tweet out any web page with its title and URL, since I made that in the process.

To Use

  • Create a new browser bookmark, and copy the contents of the tweet-this-toot.url file as the bookmark URL.

  • Open any Mastodon post in its own web page on its own host server (e.g., by clicking on the date when viewing it in your feed, or by copying the sharing URL). If you're viewing it on a different server's web app, you may need to use the "..." menu to "Open original page".

Vegetable Gardening for Beginners

Vegetable Gardening for Beginners

A friend who has lived in apartment buildings almost all her life has finally secured herself a community garden plot. She asked for advice. I wrote out a long list, and figured others might find it useful, too.

The specific dates are aimed at Toronto, Ontario. ("Now" is late April.) But the general advice and plant recommendations apply for anyone in temperate climates. I've gardened in Ottawa, Vancouver, and Edmonton. That's Canadian zones 5a, 8a, and 3b.

Beautiful bit of creative writing that arrived in my inbox today:

Dear ,

I write to solicit your collaboration and supports to enable us execute a very lucrative and high profiting business transaction. I am very sure that with trust and understanding, we can be able to execute this business to our mutual benefit and believe that you will not let down the trust I am willing to repose in you. I work for an Ivorian based public international firm (a MIC), I work as the corporate affairs manager. Between the 10th -13th of June 2015 a business seminar was held in Yamoussoukro Cote d'Ivoire of which I attended. While in the Seminar, I was opportune to meet a renowned Farmer who happens to be the 15th President of a family farm, he is an accomplished and widely known and recognized millionaire farmer in this part of the region. He has farms in different countries. Above all, he is one of the greatest suppliers of cattle, beef and other dairy products in this part of the coast.

On getting to know my profession, Alhaji the farmer took me into confidence by informing me about th

To demonstrate the use case for longer text in tweets, Twitter's Jack Dorsey made the announcement via an image tweet containing a screenshot of text. Cute, but in emphasizing how inaccessible it is, he made the announcement inaccessible too! I can't find a version of the text posted publicly, so I've transcribed it here.

Accessible version of A screenshot-tweet by Twitter's Jack Dorsey from 5 January 2016

At its core Twitter is public messaging. A simple way to say something, to anyone, that everyone in the world can see instantly.

We didn't start Twitter with a 140 character restriction. We added that early on to fit into a single SMS message (160 characters).

It's become a beautiful constraint, and I love it! It inspires creativity and brevity. And a sense of speed. We will never lose that feeling.

We've spent a lot of time observing what people are doing on Twitter, and we see them taking screenshots of text and tweeting it.
