Mod 2 Week 2

Mod 2

Week 2

1. Assess your habits from week 1: how did you spend your time this past week? What was effective in your habits? What could be more effective? What steps will you take to make that happen?

  • Truth be told, I did a poor job of incorporating my habits. A lot of my changes were supposed to occur in the morning and I spent most of last week working to get my sleep habits back on track. I think as time moves forward I'll be better equipped to start incorporating the 2 minute habits that I wanted to.

2. Write a draft of your professional story here as 1-2 paragraphs. Focus on answering the questions who are you, why are you here, and what's next? Consider how to talk about your motives and values, the turning points that led to your career change, and what you envision for yourself going forward.

When I finished college I only knew one thing: I had no interest in pursuing my major. I started to look for work with the marketable skills I had (which were few). I found an opportunity

Week 1

Ideas here are adapted from Atomic Habits by James Clear

1. Reflect on your habits from last module. What behaviors and activities were helpful for you? What activities and behaviors could be more effective for you? What processes would you like to try differently this module to become more effective at your work and as a software developer?

  • Behaviors that were helpful for me last mod were primarily regarding my sleep habits and nightly routine. I felt best, most rested, and ready to go when I kept myself to a stricter bed time and doing something like reading a bit before bed. These habits have fallen off during intermission but I'm happy to get started on them again moving forward. Processes I would like to try differently are regarding being more deliberate with my work routine and time frames. The turing schedule is helpful during the day so creating a similar struc

  1. Habits Reflection:

How have you seen yourself become more aware of your habits? Have you tried implementing anything new? What have the results been?

  • I definitely have. Espeically as this inning has progressed. The workload becomes so great that if you are not acutely aware of how you're spending your time it's easy to lose track of your hobbies and your other pursuits.
  1. Design Thinking Reflection: Cultivating Beginner’s Mind

How can beginner’s mind be helpful when it comes to thinking about your career and job search? What are some habits you could put into place to cultivate beginner’s mind regularly?

Week 4

  1. Habits Reflection

How have you seen yourself become more aware of your habits? Have you tried implementing anything new? What have the results been?

  • I have tried implementing some new habits into my bedtime routine and I have noticed that it is easier for me to fall asleep. My brain is quieter without electronics in my life right before bed. And reading something helps me switch gears mentally to leave code until the morning.

Week 3

1. Habits of a Software Developer

What do you think are the traits of a good software developer? What are they like in the workplace? What would you as a co-worker think of this person?

  • I think the traits of a good software developer are strong analytical thinking skills, good communication skills, an appreciation for teamwork, and being able to think uniquely to solve new challenges. In the workplace I believe they would be a good leader or a good listener depending on the role. I also believe they would be organized, punctual, and detail oriented in regards to their work. As a co-worker I would respect them and seek them out as a resource when I felt stuck or needed guidance.

What are the habits that this person demonstrates to embody the identity of a software developer?

Week 2

1. Power of self-reflection

What is challenging about self-reflection?

  • I think the toughest part of self reflection is that you really have to be vulnerable with yourself in order to properly self-reflect. Especially when considering weakness. It's not easy to think about what you do not do well but it is necessary in order to improve in these areas.

How can you continue to build the habit of self-reflection at Turing?

What role does empathy play in your life and how has it helped you?

I think empathy plays a pretty big role in my life. In small instances, empathy helps me stay calm in situations that are quick to make you frustrated. If someone cuts me off in traffic, well I've definitely had a car in my blindspot before and I generally feel bad after realizing I've made a mistake. That driver probably does too. With co-workers it's easier to have patience. You're working slower than normal today but I imagine you have something going on in your personal life and I know what it's like to be stressed and have something else going on in your mind. We can't all be at our best every day. In social settings too. I understand if you want to cancel our plans. I've had evenings where I come home tired and the last thing I want to do is try and be entertaining. I'm here for you if you need me but enjoy some rest.
