#Privacy and Intellectual Property Policy

Because of the nature of this course, some of our assignments will have optional components which involve publishing data online or using interactive online resources. That fact has implications for both your privacy and your intellectual property.


Federal laws protect students’ rights to privacy.

Personal information includes your name, grades, email address, gender, sexual orientation, age, phone number,address, religion, marital status, race, and other items.

In this class:

  • You are not required to publish personal information.
  • The professor will not release your personal information without your permission.
  • You must not disclose personal information about other students without permission.
  • Your may voluntarily choose to publically reveal your personal information online as part of your academic work. If you do so, please be familiar with the privacy policies relevant to internet resources that you use.

For these reasons, all assignments which use non-Vanderbilt online resources should be considered optional and voluntary. You are not required to complete them to successfully complete this class.

Please request alternate assignments from the instructors if you do not wish to use non-Vanderbilt internet resources.


Copyright laws protect the rights of those who create original works in any medium. In this class:

  • The original work you create in this class is your intellectual property.
  • You are not required to release the rights to your intellectual property created in this class.
  • You must always give proper attribution to other people’s work when incorporating it into your own.
