A guide to help me through the process of discovering who I am as a developer and how that translates into my career goals. It’s a way to check in with myself through self-reflection, prompts, and questions, organize my targeted job search, and remember who I have met as I build a professional network.

My Career Journal

1. When you've worked towards a goal in the past, what systems or tools have been helpful for you in accomplishing that goal? How could you adapt those same systems/tools to use while at Turing?

In the past I have used simple tools like "vision boards" where I lay out my end goal first and then work backwards, filling in smaller, shorter term goals that I want to accomplish along my journey. I think this tool could be extremely effective while at Turing and I plan to utilize this strategy by aligning my goals with various coding milestones that I need to achieve in order to be successful.

2. As you start this new career, what is one of your strengths and how do you know?

One of my biggest strengths would be my desire to problem solve. I know this because throughout my life I have always looked forward to activities that require some sort of problem solving and have even chosen most of my hobbies to fit that paradigm.

3. Describe how you work best (conditions, environment, preferences, etc.):

I work best in a quiet, cool environment with plenty of lighting and very few distractions. I prefer short 15-30 minute breaks every 2-3 hours or so just to give myself good mental breaks and allow my batteries to recharge.

4. As you start this new career, what is your greatest area of improvement when it comes to your professional skills?

My greatest area of improvement would definitely have to be my ability to verbalize and talk through coding problems. Thus far, I have realized that I often understand a given problem and potentially even how it should be solved, but struggle to communicate it effectively.

5. How will developing a deeper understanding of your strengths and working preferences benefit you as a software developer?

I believe that developing a deeper understanding of my strengths and working preferences will benefit me as a software developer by allowing me to utilize those strengths to uplift my weaknesses. In addition, they will help me better to figure out my role within a group setting and how I can be most effective as a team member on various group projects.

6. Describe the vision you currently have for your career after Turing:

After Turing I would like to be working within the software development industry, helping develop software that improves some aspect of the company I am working with. I would like to travel a bit and learn about all of the different ways that software development plays a role in various industries. In addition, I would like to continue to improve on my skills and learn about other software tools and languages that will compliment my already acquired skillsets.
