Hi there,

I am trying to install bash 5.0 on mac osx 10.15.6 and am getting the exact same error you show here:

/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/SDKs/MacOSX10.15.sdk/usr/include/string.h:134:7: error: expected
      identifier or '('
char    *strsignal(int __sig);
         ^
./siglist.h:37:27: note: expanded from macro 'strsignal'
#  define strsignal(sig) (char *)sys_siglist[sig]
                          ^
In file included from siglist.c:36:

This gist is the only other reference to this problem that I've found on the internet! Do you have a solution?

The same error happens regardless of whether I try to install through Homebrew or manual compilation. I have update XCode Command Line Tools to the latest version. None of the other common problems related to building C code on OSX seem to apply 😞

Thank you!

Sadly, no, I think this issue is from Bash, and it needs to be fished by Bash devs, but idk where we can report bash issues.

Hi Diego, thanks so much for your response!

I was investigating this more today and seem to have found a solution!

First I managed to install gcc-10 via Homebrew (originally that was giving me errors too, so I'm not exactly sure how I ended up with it). I then successfully installed bash-5.0 like this:

brew install --cc=gcc-10 bash

Which tells homebrew to use $HOMEBREW_PREFIX/bin/gcc-10 instead of the system gcc, and that did the trick.

My system gcc is as follows, just like yours:

$ gcc --version
Configured with: --prefix=/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr --with-gxx-include-dir=/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/SDKs/MacOSX10.15.sdk/usr/include/c++/4.2.1
Apple clang version 12.0.0 (clang-1200.0.31.1)
Target: x86_64-apple-darwin19.6.0
Thread model: posix
InstalledDir: /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr/bin

My colleague had no problems running brew install bash with Apple clang 11.0.3. So I think clang 12.0 is the problem. You could also try downgrading that to see if it works.

Good luck!

This is very interesting and I think it should be reported behavior for Bash!.

If clang 12 appears to be the problem.

Thanks a lot for this contribution :D

Can confirm this working perfectly with GCC.

Will do further research into seeing if we can get this to compile with clang with some args.

I checked the following commands.

Apple clang version 12.0.0 (clang-1200.0.32.2)

[mhimuro@imac ~]$ gcc --version
Configured with: --prefix=/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/usr --with-gxx-include-dir=/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/MacOSX.platform/Developer/SDKs/MacOSX.sdk/usr/include/c++/4.2.1

[mhimuro@imac ~]$

install gcc@9 ( take a little time )

$ brew install gcc@9

install bash with --cc option

$ brew install --cc=gcc-9 bash

bash 5.0.18 install completion

Bash bugs should be reported on bug-readline@gnu.org
(I'd be happy to do so - let me know what you'd prefer)

or maybe better on bug-bash@gnu.org (there is an overlap between these lists, as a lot of readline code is in bash). Sorry for confusion

@dimpase I would be more than thankful if you report this bugs!

Let's see if we can get this fixed, else we might be forced to use gcc as the compiler for bash in future macOS versions.

this is apparently fixed in their latest release candidate, try building
http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/bash/bash-5.1-rc1.tar.gz

I tried with

% gcc -v
Configured with: --prefix=/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr --with-gxx-include-dir=/Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/SDKs/MacOSX10.15.sdk/usr/include/c++/4.2.1
Apple clang version 12.0.0 (clang-1200.0.32.27)
Target: x86_64-apple-darwin19.6.0
Thread model: posix
InstalledDir: /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr/bin

and it worked for me.
