Putin Helps Trump Bring Up His Numbers
Two months after Donald Trump's inauguration, he's still talking about the number of people who attended his ceremony. The next day, his press secretary, Sean Spicer said:

"Photographs of the inaugural proceedings were intentionally framed in a way, in one particular Tweet, to minimize the enormous support that had gathered on the National Mall," Spicer said on Jan. 21. "That was the largest audience to witness an inauguration, period. Both in person and around the globe."

Why is he still talking about this? And, why are we still talking about it? At the beginning of March 2017, the National Park Service finally released the aerial photographs they took of the National Mall just before Trump's inauguration, comparing them to Barack Obama's first swearing in eight years before. These are the same photos they sent to Trump when he first made his allegations.

It seems Trump has a problem with numbers. At his Nashville "Make America Great Again rally on March 15 he took credit for two months of good job reports: "In the first two job reports since I took the oath of office, we’ve already added nearly half a million new jobs." Yet, only one of those months was during his term. And, the upward trajectory was already in place way before he took office.

In addition, Trump has exaggerated his defense budget, saying it "calls for one of the single largest increases in defense spending history in this country." Both Jimmy Carter's and Ronald Reagan's defense budget was more. Trump's budget is a 9.4% increase over last year's budget. Carter's and Reagan's increases were over 20% from the year before.

Donald Trump likes to boast. Everything's "the greatest, the best, the largest." Perhaps, he needs Vladimir Putin's help with numbers.

See all the posters from the Chamomile Tea Party!
Donald Trump's list of "fake news" stories he has started or promoted is long and well-known. From claiming Barack Obama was not an American citizen, to his statement he saw Muslims cheering after the attacks on 9/11, each has provoked outrage from those who believed him as well as those who thought they were out-and-out lies.

The resilience of these stories has caused many to believe we are now living in a Post-Truth era, where truth is meaningless. For years, the American people have had to deal with political "spin" —ferreting out the truth from statements delivered by politicians and their operatives. Donald Trump has taken this to new heights.

Is this what we will have to look forward to for the next four years? When will the fulcrum return to a place where the veracity of a politician's word has some currency?

See all the posters from the Chamomile Tea Party!
Not Here! Not Now. Not Ever.
The election is over. Donald Trump is President-Elect. So, now what? Well, if we were willing to "wait and see," it didn't take long for Trump to show his hand. Soon after his election he named Steve Bannon as his chief strategist. Bannon, executive chairman of the ultra-conservative website, Beitbart News became Trump's chief executive in August 2016. Breitbart, a media darling of the alt-right, often focuses on fringe issues like birtherism and racist and homophobic topics. Followers of the site think Fox News is too tame.

Rather than treat news as facts, Bannon's style is to treat each story as an unfolding narrative where facts are less important than the grand crusade of the right against the left. Victories are more important than the facts. That's the way he ran Trump's campaign and now we are in for the same during his administration.

According to Will Rahn of CBS News, "offending progressives is something many conservative pundits love to do, in large part because progressives can be easy to offend.... The alt-right’s innovation here...is to take that tendency to its logical extreme. Did a Jewish author say something you disagree with? Send him a photoshop of him being sent to Auschwitz! It’s all in good fun, you see."

More important, Trump's election has given license to these extremists to play out their conspiracy theories in the real world. Since the election, the Southern Poverty Law Center has received over 200 reports of hate crimes in the country: Swastikas painted on a suburban Maryland elementary school bathroom, a Muslim student threatened at the University of Michigan demanding she remove her hijab or be set on fire with a lighter, and Black students at Penn being put on a racist message showing a calendar for daily lynchings. Yes, that's all in good fun, isn't it.

Is this the kind of country we want? I'm not going to "wait and see." History shows we'd better start speaking up and speaking loud.

Not here! Not now. Not ever.

Coming to the Million Women March in D.C. on January 21, 2017?
Donald Trump campaigned as the defender of the working class while he promised to "drain the swamp" of elites and insiders. Yet, he has done just the opposite. At one time or another, his cabinet has included at least two billionaires and many multi-millionaires.

Trump has signed many executive orders which have benefited large corporations and business interests, not the working and middle classes. These include: loosening regulations on The Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, a consumer protection bill passed after the Great Recession of 2008, reducing the scope of the Clean-Water Bill, and diluting the strength of the Stream Protection Rule, which limits permits to dump excess mining "spoil" into our waterways. Conservatives counter, this is a logical reaction to what is perceived as federal government overreach.

Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, and President Trump tried unsuccessfully to repeal the Affordable Care Act and both the House and the Senate have voted to restructure the tax code to give corporations and the rich huge tax cuts, while placing more of a tax burden on the middle class. Their mantra has been that tax cuts for the rich will spur economic development, providing more jobs. However, this theory of "trickledown economics" has been proven not to work.

Big money is an entrenched part of Donald Trump's "populist" bully pulpit.
Oppression Is Not an Either/Or
On this 4th of July, it's important to remember that oppression is not mutually exclusive to one group or another. In fact, in today's America, there are many who suffer discrimination. One's religion, race, economic status, gender, or other ways we identify, should have no bearing on opportunities for life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness. So, it was written at the start of our country. And we 21st century Americans have an obligation to continue to welcome those who wish to share and contribute to our country. Unfortunately, as it stands today in 2017, we are far from this ideal.

See all the posters from the Chamomile Tea Party!
The GOP Troika: Serving the Party, Not the People
When the Republican Party gained control of the House of Representatives after the 2010 midterm elections, the GOP not only impeded bipartisan progress, but actively worked against it (although some might suggest this started in 1994 when Newt Gingrich became the Speaker of the House). A few highlights:

Jason Chaffitz, former Representative from Utah and Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform investigated Hillary Clinton and the Obama Administration but refused to investigate Donald Trump's conflicts of interest. In addition, he refused to investigate former White House National Security Advisor Michael Flynn's ties to Russia, stating Flynn's real transgression was lying to the president. (In December 2017, Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI and will cooperate with the Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of the Trump campaign's ties to Russia.)

Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, condemned Donald Trump's antics during the Republican primaries and general election, but, endorsed him anyway. Why? Because he was more interested in the GOP controlling both the Legislative and Executive Branches of the government than what was best for the American people. The Republican Party has consistently acted in its own best interests.

Take a look at the companion poster to this one.
The Dems: We'll Let You Know When You're Needed
During the 2016 election, the Democrat Party’s establishment felt the wrath of more progressive voters. Like the GOP's Tea Party, the extreme left caused a split in the party. Life-long liberals abandoned Hillary Clinton's "establishment" campaign for Bernie Sanders. Hillary's approval ratings were flat. And, she made mistakes. But, rather than deal with this issue, the party did little to engender goodwill with its more progressive wing to unite the Left. Donald Trump’s election galvanized many Americans. The electorate across the political spectrum was clearly saying, enough is enough. No more politics as usual.
There's Nothing American About America First
The phrase, "America First" was first used in 1940 by the anti-war group, the America First Committee. This was one of the largest organizations to oppose America's entrance into World War II. It's membership included many well-known Americans including writer Sinclair Lewis, poet E. E. Cummings, animator Walt Disney, actor Lillian Gish, and architect Frank Lloyd Wright. But, one of its most outspoken was aviator Charles Linbergh. Six days after the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 the AFC disbanded and many of its leaders supported the war effort.

In his inauguration speech on January 20, 2017, Donald Trump invoked a similar isolationist sentiment when he stated, "We assembled here today are issuing a new decree to be heard in every city, in every foreign capital, and in every hall of power. From this day forward, a new vision will govern our land. From this day forward, it's going to be only America first, America first."

One week after he became President, Trump signed an Executive Order banning Muslims from seven Mideast counties. "Extreme vetting," he said, was warranted to keep our country safe. The fact that we already have an arduous two year vetting process, in which no immigrant even chooses to come to the United States (they are chosen by the American government), seemed to get lost in political maelstrom that followed his order. Immigrants, students, and visitors, already with proper visas were stopped from entering the country. Even lawful permanent residents with Green Cards were turned away.

America is an immigrant nation where millions have contributed to its success. A plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty states, "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" These lines come from the poem "The New Colossus," written by Emma Lazarus in 1883.

Donald Trump's "America First" policy is a short-sighted political move to placate those workers who have lost their jobs to technology and globalization shifts in the last few decades. But our isolation will create a vacuum that China and Russia, and even Iran, will be quick to fill. "America First" over simplifies and even obfuscates the challenges the United States faces at this time. It goes against the very reason our country was created. And, it will end up haunting future generations of Americans.

See all the posters from the Chamomile Tea Party!
Resistance is a Ground Game: Grab Your Tools
Resistance to the policies of Donald Trump and the Republican Party requires more than just protest marches. Real work has to be done: organizing at the local level, speaking to our representatives when they come back to our districts, and coming together with others who want to work on the same issues we do. Grab your tools and pick your issues.

I have two. Donald Trump supporters voted for him because they were angry at being ignored: ignored by the GOP and left out of the social changes they saw around them. They voted for Trump because he said things no other politician would say—connecting him to their feelings (even when voters knew what he was saying was outlandish). We have to find a way of talking with these people and offering a tangible alternative. And one issue where many of us agree is the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). Losing our health insurance is something none of us want. And no other issue at this point comes closest to uniting us.

There is another group of people who supported Trump for another reason: power. Leaders of the GOP and many other conservative elites supported him because they wanted to retain their power in the legislature, in business, and on Wall Street. The only way to upend their hold is to insure the election process is fair. As the Republican Party gained majorities in state offices, they gerrymandered Congressional and state legislative districts in their favor (note: the Democrats have done similar things when given the opportunity—take Maryland's 3rd Congressional District as one of the most egregious examples of gerrymandering). For some, Trump's performance will vindicate their support of him; for others it will reinforce the fears they had on November 9, 2016.

Trump thought it would be easier than it has been. Running the country is not the same as running a company. The Constitution stipulates a separation of power between the Executive, the Legislative, and the Judicial parts of our government. Trump is learning he is not king and his power is not absolute. Yet, he continues to try to exercise absolute control.

But, if one had to summarize his first 100 days in office, he is being taught important civic lessons he probably missed in school, but he continues to struggle with understanding just how things really work in Washington. And, the question is, will he ever learn? Said his teacher to the American people.

See all the posters from the Chamomile Tea Party!
Donald Trump's administration has been plagued with missteps since he was inaugurated. And, many would say he is woefully unprepared and unfit to be President of the United States.

In a recent online conversation, one Trump supporter called him "open, candid, fresh..." I countered by saying, "Yes, you could say all of those attributes are technically true, but looking at the details, he is childishly open. He has no sense of boundaries. He is candid, but rude and he feels no compunction lying. In fact, sadly, he doesn't even realize he's lying and can't judge the criticism he gets. He's incapable of even questioning his own motives. And, he refuses to listen to people who actually want to help him navigate this political landscape. He is indeed fresh, meaning that no one, especially a president would ever act or talk the way he does. Just because no one has ever acted that way doesn't mean it's good and especially good for the country. He feels entitled. He feels his opinions are the only opinions worth listening to. He is socially awkward and doesn't trust anyone."

Many thought and hoped (such as congressional leaders Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell) after he took office, the swagger that was Trump the Candidate would become more presidential. This has not come to pass.

On May 17, 2017, former FBI Director, Robert Mueller was appointed to be special counsel for the United States Department of Justice. He will be investigating "any links and/or coordination between Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump, and any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation."

Donald Trump doesn’t know much about American history nor American jurisprudence. As the head of state, this lack of knowledge, curiosity, and, most importantly, his disregard for the law are a danger to the country and its citizens.

If there is a connection between his campaign and Russian involvement, he must be stopped.

Note: The ₽ throughout the poster is the currency symbol for the Russian ruble.

See all the posters from the Chamomile Tea Party!
The GOP won’t stop lying to the American people. At the end of July 2017, the Senate tried to repeal Obamacare once again. The bill was bad; it put many Americans’ health in jeopardy, and, yet, most Republican lawmakers hadn’t even read the bill by the time it came to the Senate floor. With its defeat, citizens from across the political spectrum breathed a sigh of relief. Not satisfied with the will of the majority of Americans, in September 2017, Republican Senators Bill Cassidy and Lindsay Graham tried “one last time” to replace the Affordable Healthcare Act with another hastily put-together bill (Graham-Cassidy). It never reached the Senate floor for a vote.

In May 2017, Senator Cassidy stated, “no family should be denied medical care, emergency or otherwise because they can’t afford it.” Yet, the Congressional Budget Office predicted millions would lose their health insurance under this bill. And, it would not protect those with pre-existing conditions. When late night host Jimmy Kimmel called Cassidy on this, the Senator lied, saying the bill would provide insurance to those with pre-existing conditions. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) stated, “I could maybe give you 10 reasons why this bill shouldn’t be considered. But Republicans campaigned on this so often that you have a responsibility to carry out what you said in the campaign. That’s pretty much as much of a reason as the substance of the bill.”

So, why the great rush to pass another bill few lawmakers had read? According to Vox, the GOP was being pressured by its donors for a “win.” It didn't matter what that win was; but their high rollers wanted to see some benefits for injecting the party with millions of dollars. Money speaks volumes.
Sexual harassment is bad enough. But the power and control behind it make it an ongoing nightmare. Even after it's over, it's easy to blame ourselves—a mix of anger and self-doubt. Victims (and, yes, they are victims of predatory behavior) fear retaliation and, even more important, that no one will believe them. This is the silence that has protected abusers for decades.

With revelations of Kevin Spacey's and Harvey Weinstein's serial abuse, the dam suddenly has given way. There is a new scarlet letter adorning the likes of Charlie Rose, Al Franken, Matt Lauer, ad nauseum. But, why now? To that we owe a debt of "gratitude" to Donald Trump. His unabashed misogyny, coupled with the blindness of his followers to his morality has unleashed a force, a strong feminist force in our culture. Millions of women and men around the world protested his behavior the day after Trump's inauguration. From that moment, women empowered with a shared experience (both the reality of sexual abuse as well as the gathering of like minds) vowed to take control of their lives. In addition, many men, not only supported them but took a stand against the patriarchy—the "good ole boy's club"—that has affected all of us. The swiftness of these changes is both empowering and scary.

Groups formed to encourage women to speak out and to take power. Pantsuit Nation is full of testimonies by women who decided to run for office in their towns and cities. And, this fall, they won big. The backlash against men like Trump is intensifying. Finally, our Congress has been outed in the most profound way. In 1995, it enacted the Congressional Accountability Act (CAA). The law's impetus was to make members of Congress accountable to the very labor laws they passed (and had exempted themselves from). In addition, it addressed sexual harassment by legislators and staff. Until the CAA, there was absolutely no path for victims to seek redress.

But, while the CAA offers the abused a way forward, the process is long and forces accusers to attend 30 days of counseling before moving to mediation. There is no counseling for the alleged perpetrator. And, most astounding, if a Congressman or staff is found guilty, settlements for that abuse are paid by taxpayers, not the abusers, whose identity is not made public. Over the past 20 years, the Office of Compliance has paid out over $17.2 million of taxpayers' money to settle 268 claims.

One of the most hidden problems in American culture has finally reached the tipping point. For that, I thank thousands of women who found the courage and the fortitude to speak out, support others, seek political office, and, most importantly, take back control of their lives. Yet, a recent Politico poll shows that partisanship is still a deciding factor whether the public finds sexual harassment claims credible. While Democrats are more likely to believe these claims, whether the accused is a Democrat or Republican, Republicans are less like to believe them if they are leveled at a member of the GOP. This isn't over yet.

It's time for the rest of us to take responsibility for the fear and manipulation men have used to control others. The tax cuts they've enacted will mostly benefit corporations and the rich.

Most importantly, these cuts will add over $1 trillion to our deficit. So, it will be our children and our children's children who will pay for all of this. Historically, deficit reduction was always central to the GOP's platform. In part, their insistence on reducing the debt during the Obama Administration was responsible for taking back the House and Senate in the 2010 midterm elections. But, no more. In power, both in the legislative and executive branches, they've gone on a spending spree. And now that the tax cuts have passed, Republicans are saying they will have to cut programs, like Medicare, in order to pay for these cuts. The poor and middle class will suffer.

Merry Christmas, Republicans. While the President focused on the direction the special counsel's work is going, he was completely silent on Russia's meddling.

Slowly, but surely Mueller's investigation is moving to prove that the Trump campaign's collusion with the Russians is also "incontrovertible."

See all the posters from the Chamomile Tea Party!
Trump's Military Parade
In February 2018, Donald Trump informed the Pentagon that he'd like to have a military parade in Washington, DC, "just like they did in France." But, this was not about honoring our military and the brave soldiers who have put their lives on the line for our country, as Trump stated. In fact, many in the armed services were against it. In reality, this parade was to massage Trump's ego. It was the pinnacle of his narcissism (to date). The millions of dollars that will be spent to put on this spectacle could be used to help the many Americans who need our help. It could help the many homeless veterans who need shelter. Make no mistake, this was Trump's folly.

See all the posters from the Chamomile Tea Party!
Truth Is: We're In Trouble
The truth is, we're in trouble. When lies are described as "alternative facts" as Kellyanne Conway, Counselor to the President told NBC News, then our society has lost its bearings. Any curious and intelligent person would scratch their head. A truth is a truth, although there may be many opinions.

Trump's allegation that his inauguration had the largest crowd ever seems so tame now compared to his latest accusation: that, preceding the election, President Obama ordered a wiretap of Trump's phones at Trump Tower in New York. If investigators had found reason to tap Donald Trump's phones, they would have taken the request to do so to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, a court independent of the White House.

We are in trouble when Donald Trump uses the widow of Navy Seal Ryan Owen, who died in a botched attack in Yemen, to divert our attention to her grief instead of his refusal to take responsibility for the failed action. As Commander-in-Chief, he blamed his generals: “This was a mission that was started before I got here,” he said. “This was something they wanted to do. And they lost Ryan.” We're in trouble when the leader of our country cowardly blames others for something he green-lighted.

During the Oscars, the New York Times ran this ad about the truth. It ends by stating: The truth is hard. The truth is hard to find. The truth is hard to know. The truth is more important than ever.

And, the truth is, as long as our President blatantly deceives for his own gain and distracts us from determining important facts, the American people, whether one is conservative or liberal, are in trouble.

See all the posters from the Chamomile Tea Party!
The GOP Says: Americans Are Better Off Now
In July 2018, House Republicans published a polished video extolling the progress the GOP has made in making Americans' lives better. They said, "Republican policies are helping improve people’s lives and making it easier for families to get ahead, with a renewed sense of confidence for the future. America is stronger at home and abroad, with a booming economy, safer communities, and a stronger military."

This slick propaganda contradicts citizens' reality. Instead, the GOP has passed a tax cut for the rich, while raising the debt to be repaid by our children and grandchildren. Worse, they said it would help the middle class. They refuse to acknowledge the dangers of climate change and have lowered pollution standards throughout the country. Every month there is legislation or executive orders meant to weaken the Affordable Care Act. People's health coverage is at risk. And, finally, they have only offered their "thoughts and prayers" whenever there is a gun massacre. I wouldn't call that bettering Americans' lives.

How long will we have to hold our breath to get a government that puts its citizens before politicians' ambition?

Just let that sink in.

See all the posters from the Chamomile Tea Party!
A Curious American is a Patriotic American
"To abandon facts is to abandon freedom. If nothing is true, then no one can criticize power because there is no basis upon which to do so."

--Timothy Snyder in On Tyranny

These posters started with an interest in propaganda and how it's used to sell ideas. According to Timothy Snyder, an historian who has studied 20th century fascism in central and eastern Europe, today we are experiencing a "crisis of responsibility." Those in power say they are blocked from taking action by the opposition. Yet, in reality, the internet allows us to effectively target our messages to very specific groups. Russia successfully used the net to influence the 2016 presidential election. The reaction by the students to the massacre at of Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida was so effective, the gun lobby was forced to mobilize to counter and discredit them. And, just as quickly, when conservative pundit Laura Ingraham mocked shooting survivor David Hogg's college rejections, within a day, this 17-year-old successfully called for a boycott of Ingraham's sponsors on Twitter. This is a new and more efficient propaganda from that practiced by the Nazis and Soviets of the 20th century.

Snyder suggests that Factuality is one of our most threatened institutions. If we don't believe in facts, he says, we can't cooperate, leading to a breakdown of our society. This is happening in America now. His book, On Tyranny offers twenty ways we can mitigate the technological changes that have made this so easy and potentially so dangerous.

Seek different opinions, question our own biases, and find ways to engage the opposition in dialogue. A curious American is a patriotic American.
—
For more information, watch a dialogue with Timothy Snyder that took place at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs on February 21, 2018.

See all the posters from the Chamomile Tea Party!
