A Signed Distance Font Builder for Dear ImGui
/*
* edtaa3()
*
* Sweep-and-update Euclidean distance transform of an
* image. Positive pixels are treated as object pixels,
* zero or negative pixels are treated as background.
* An attempt is made to treat antialiased edges correctly.
* The input image must have pixels in the range [0,1],
* and the antialiased image should be a box-filter
* sampling of the ideal, crisp edge.
* If the antialias region is more than 1 pixel wide,
* the result from this transform will be inaccurate.
*
* By Stefan Gustavson (stefan.gustavson@gmail.com).
*
* Originally written in 1994, based on a verbal

*
* Updated in 2004 to treat border pixels correctly,
* and cleaned up the code to improve readability.
*
* Updated in 2009 to handle anti-aliased edges.
*
* Updated in 2011 to avoid a corner case infinite loop.
*
* Updated 2012 to change license from LGPL to MIT.
*
* Updated 2014 to fix a bug in the gradient computations. Ahem.

Docs are at the top of imguiSdfGenerator.h.
Ubuntu-B.ttf 13 pxls cfg.OversampleH=cfg.OversampleV=4;
imgui_sdf_test_02

[Edit:]: In Rev.1 I used direct calculations on the vectorial shape of the glyphs.

Another (more common) approach, easier to implement, is to simply post-process the normal glyph texture using the file edtaa by Stefan Gustavson. This is used in a lot of projects, such as the popular freetype_gl.

Making further experiments, it seems that the edtaa approach used by freetype_gl is not only much easier, but much better: see some results:
Ubuntu-B.ttf 13 pxls cfg.OversampleH=cfg.OversampleV=1; (16 times less texture memory than in the pic posted above!)
selection_041

And the default font now works much better too:
selection_042

All these pics have been taken using the standard stb_truetype.h. Chances are that using the freetype lib we can get even better results.

ROADMAP:

  • Although it's trivial, flush all this code and post another one using edtaa.

Some reference code notes for the impatients:

// At the end of a standard Build(ImFontAtlas* atlas) we just need to append something like:
    int w,h;
    unsigned char* texData;
    atlas->GetTexDataAsAlpha8(&texData,&w,&h);
    ImVector<unsigned char> tmpData;tmpData.resize(w*h);
    ImGuiEdtaaHelper::make_distance_mapb(texData,w,h,&tmpData[0]);
    memcpy(texData,&tmpData[0],w*h);
// where make_distance_mapb(...) is a trivial adaptation of the code that uses edtaa3func.c and that can be found here:
// https://github.com/rougier/freetype-gl/blob/master/distance-field.c

DONE in Revision 2 😃!

And now it's independent on the "font library" stb_truetype.h (and can be used in imgui_freetype too).

Revision 3

Same as Rev.2, but all embedded in the single file: edtaa3func.h.
See the usage documentation there (however the fragment shader code has been stripped from the comment: you may need to download Rev.2 if you need it).

How do you implement font stroke?

I've been working on font strokes for a few days. Can you share a copy of the code that works my bro?
