Thinking About {kau}

This is a translation of the Lojban above. While some parts have been rephrased for ease of reading, the general style and structure intentionally mirrors that of the lojban text.

I’ve been thinking about the uses of {kau}. I think I’ve decided on a useful version of the meaning, and I hope that the lojbanists that like logic and various kinds of maths and sciences like this interpretation.

1. New Meaning for {kau}

{kau} seems to be related to functions, in the same way that {ce’u} is, but for their grammar. But {kau} I don’t see used for ordinary predicates while {ce’u} is. I think the reason for this is that the thing {kau} is a sign for isn’t provided to the reader by definitions. I’d like to suggest this:

It’s known that {ko’a ko’e me’au loka ce’u ce’u broda} has the same meaning as {ko’a ko’e broda}, and I propose that {ko’a ko’e me’au loka ce’u makau broda} have the same meaning as {ko’a ka ko’e ce’u broda}, and {ko’a me’au lodu’u makau broda} be equal to {ko’a ka ce’u broda}.

Different uses of {kau} will be explained later. Please wait.

2. Effects of the Change

Before this change is approved, the meaning of, for example, zmadu3 and all the similar places have been strange and little is known about them. Fluent lojbanists are capable of using them effectively, and those listening to them can understand, but the precision with which we understand is sleight. I’ll explain the meaning of {zmadu}, as an example.

I define the meaning of {zmadu} to be as follows: x1 is greater than x2 in property x3 (ka+makau); the value substituted for makau when applying x3 to x1 is greater in numeric value than the value substituted for makau when applying x3 to x2.

For example, {lo mlatu lo gerku cu zmadu leka mi nelci ce’o fi’o gradu makau}.

At the end of this text, I give several more definitions of similar words.

3. Meaning of Different Applications of {kau}

{ma} isn’t the only question word, but all other uses of {kau} can be expressed in terms of {ma}.

  1. xu: {du’u xukau broda} (which is the same as {jei broda}) becomes {du’u makau jezyje’u lodu’u broda}
  2. mo: {du’u mokau} becomes {du’u me’au makau}
  3. xo: {du’u xokau broda cu brode} becomes {du’u ni’e makau broda cu brode}
  4. ji: {du’u broda jikau brode} becomes {du’u broda ji’oi me’au makau te’u brode}
  5. pei: {du’u peikau broda} becomes {du’u makau se cinmo do do’e lodu’u broda}
  6. cu’e: {du’u cu’ekau ko’a broda} becomes {du’u fi’o me’au makau ko’a broda}
  7. se’u’o: {du’u se’u’okau broda} becomes {du’u se xi xokau broda} (which is expanded again) If you need to use something similar to {setese}, the number will be {li re ce’o ci ce’o re}
  8. pau’i: This is very complex, and a lengthy explanation follows: When you want to respond to a question which uses {pau’i}, you can respond with something which would otherwise be ungrammatical. This means the response to the question must use {lo’u} and {le’u}. All uses of {pau’i} expand to something like {makau basti tezu’e lonu jetnu kei lo spisa be lo preti be’o poi se tcita zo pau’i}, or “something which replaces the part of the question tagged with pau’i to make the statement true.”

4. {ni}

When using no instances of {ce’u}, {ni} is like {du’u}, but for needing a {xokau} to be correct. On the other hand, when using {ce’u}, it’s like {ka}.

For example: {lo mi zdani lo mi karce cu jibni loni ce’u litce li xokau} (although I also approve of replacing {li xokau} with {makau} here).

5. New Definitions of Several Words as Examples

zmadu: x1 is greater than x2 is property x3 (ka+xokau) by amount x4; the value subsituted for xokau when applying x3 to x1 is greater in numeric value than the value substituted for xokau when applying x3 to x2, by quantity x4.

zenba: x1 is increasing in property x2 (ka+xokau) by amount x3; the value substituted for xokau after applying x2 to x1 is greater than the value substituted for xokau after applying x2 to a past version of x1 by amount x3.

frica: x1 is different from x2 in property x3 (ka+makau); the value substituted for makau after applying x3 to x1 is not the same as the value substituted for makau after applying x3 to x2.

panra: x1 is the same as x2 in all aspects except property x3 (ka+makau); x3 is the only predicate for which the value substituted for makau after applying it to x1 and x2 would differ.

traji: x1 is first among x4 in property x2, ordered by x3 (ka/2+makau); x1 is related by relation x3 (ka/2+makau, default loka zmadu) to all elements of x4 in property x2; for all pairs of x1 and elements of x2, x is the result of applying x3 to them., property x2 expresses x.

djuno: x1 is aware that x2, which is associated with x3, is true by epistomology x4; if x2 contains a {kau}, then x1 is aware that something exists which when substituted for the {kau} so that x2 will be truthy.

dukse: The value of makau in x2 (ka+xokau) which is required for a truthy application of the property to x1, preventing x3 from occurring.

banzu: The value of makau in x2 (ka+xokau) which is required for a truthy appliction of the property to x1 causes x3 to be possible.
