How to fully install and configure Linux Mint on your computer

Installing Linux Mint "Soup to Nuts"

Preparation:

  1. Your data securely Backed-up (A USB Drive would be good)
    Suitable USB external Hard Drives:
  2. A copy of Linux Mint (Cinnamon or Mate)

  3. Either:
    1. A Small USB Stick (2 GB minimum but 4 GB better)
    2. BalenaEtcher (to create a bootable USB Stick)

  4. Or, if you just want to practice for now:
    1. Virtual Box
      [https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads]

Steps

  1. Backup your data to an external drive and ensure it is OK. You're going to wipe your computer's hard disk so you must have an external copy.
  2. Check that you have located and backed up all your data to the external drive. This step is extremely important because you always forget something.
  3. Download the ISO of Linux Mint you want to use.
  4. Download either Balena Etcher or Virtualbox depending on your situation.
  5. Install either Balena Etcher or Virtualbox depending on your situation.
  6. If you're using Balena Etcher copy the Linux Mint ISO to the small USB Stick.
  7. Reboot your computer with the small USB Stick inserted
    or
    start VirtualBox and create a new VM.
