Chicago Community Areas with region and key neighborhoods, and 2020 population by race

I had reason to want a list of Chicago Community Areas annotated to assign each to a region of the city. I couldn't find it in structured form, so I built it.

I used this research guide from Harold Washington College Libraries, which assigned each community area to a region and listed key neighborhoods. I simplified "Central, Near North, and Near South Side" to just "Central". I also simplified "West and Near West Side" to just "West."

Since part of my project included aligning population numbers, the CSV in this gist also includes a simplified version of the 2020 Decennial Census redistricting table P2, "Hispanic or Latino, and not Hispanic or Latino by Race," as downloaded from Census Reporter. The simplifications were to rename columns, and to omit all of the detailed columns for "two or more races." I also dropped the 2010 and percentage change columns, and computed the percent for different racial classifications (shown here in decimal format, so properly, should be multiplied by 100 to get a proper "percent").

It should be understood that, except for latino_pct, all racial groups are non-latino. The data release does not provide any finer clarification among different possible races for latino people.

To be explicit, here are the details for the data columns:

  • total_pop: "P2-1: Total (2020)",
  • latino_pct: "P2-2: Hispanic or Latino (2020)" divided by total_pop
  • white_pct: "P2-5: White alone (2020)" divided by total_pop
  • black_pct: "P2-6: Black or African American alone (2020)" divided by total_pop
  • amerind_pct: "P2-7: American Indian and Alaska Native alone (2020)" divided by total_pop
  • asian_pct: "P2-8: Asian alone (2020)" divided by total_pop
  • nhpi_pct: "P2-9: Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone (2020)" divided by total_pop
  • other_pct: "P2-10: Some other race alone (2020)" divided by total_pop
  • two_or_more_pct: "P2-11: Population of two or more races (2020)" divided by total_pop
