Art's Cafe:

  • My favorite place for breakfast/brunch. Good omelettes (especially the 'tofu' omelet—it has sausage and kimchi in it), hash browns, burgers, bi bim bap, and of course the strawberry lemonade. The coffee is not good, but the Beanery is around the corner, and their coffee is good.

Zanze's cheesecake

  • This man opened this cheesecake shop in 1979. He really only makes three types of cheesecakes (plain, choco, mocha), and he can put blueberries, raspberries, or brandied cherries on top. That's all he does, and that's all he's done for almost 30 years. Better go there before long, as I don't know how long it will be before he retires. It kind of transcends cheesecake. It's unbelievably light and fluffy, and you have to cut it with a fishing line (he supplies this), because it will just fall apart if you use a knife.

Tekka http://www.yelp.com/biz/tekka-japanese-restaurant-san-francisco I'm not sure if this is the best sushi restaurant, but it's the one I enjoy going to the most. It only seats about 9 and they don't take reservations. The sushi chef has a giant cutting board and listens to the beegees while he prepares the sushi. All of the non-sushi food is prepared by his wife, who is also the waitress. Most of the menu is in Japanese, so if you can figure out the kanji you should be okay. Otherwise you might want to bring someone Japanese.

S & E

  • http://www.yelp.com/biz/s-and-e-cafe-san-francisco I wouldn't recommend this place on a general level, but it fills a special place in my heart that no other place in SF does. It's a (supposedly) Hong Kong style cafe that's open until 2am and has an amazing selection of foods and beverages. The quality of the food varies with the item and the particular evening, but I miss their milkshakes, coffee, pork chops, and especially the bitter melon beef with black bean sauce over rice.
