Personal Story Personal Development

Former engineer and public school educator turned software developer attending Turing School of Software and Design in Denver, CO with an expected graduation date of January 2020.

I have always been drawn to math, physics, and the science of building things. Putting all those pieces together, I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. I enjoyed being an educator at charter school and a part of a small engineering firm, where I worked in a variety of team roles. Somehow, I always found myself being pulled towards technology and programming. As my professional experience grew, I began to see how I could leverage my engineering, teaching, and problem solving background in new ways. This lead me to the Turing School of Software and Design where I honed the skills necessary to be part of a dynamic software development team.

my work in engineering but I found myself being pulled towards technology and programming. I am excited to see where this new career path take me.

It wasn’t until late in my college education, when I started taking a few programming classes, that I realized I liked programming too—and that maybe I was in the wrong major.

I especially apreciate the marrage of form and function.

I saw that people switch careers quite a bit and that gave me the motivation to do the boot camp and change career paths.

Hi Kirk, it would appear that this is very much still a work in progress, so I'm going to provide some feedback on how you might approach fleshing this out a little more. Your first 2 paragraphs show that background interest and clear turning point when you knew you wanted to switch careers. I would like to know a little more about why programming was the career for you rather than mechanical engineering -- what specifically ignited your passion in programming? What can you do in this career that you can't in mechanical engineering? And then, now that you're in this field, what do you want to do? How do you see yourself contributing to the tech industry? Answering these questions will provide that answer to the "why" you have listed here. Let me know if you want to talk through this further!
