Strengths & Storytelling Reflection Guidelines

Build on your professional story by thinking about how you're progressing at Turing. Answer the questions below in your own gist to use your StrengthsFinder themes to add to your story:

  • Look at your initial StrengthsFinder reflection that you completed in week 1 -- how have your perceptions of the top 5 themes stayed the same? How have they changed?

My inspirations of the future and the endless possibilities of what I can do in the future are still keeping me motivated everyday. I also am continuing to achieve something everyday and have noticed my dissatisfaction when I haven't accomplished something shortly after. My learning strength is also building but I have learned that this strength turns off if I get frustrated too long. Learning how to control that frustration and how I can break things down even smaller is something I'm working on in order to continue building that strength. I have found that I am becoming less strategic in the fact that I'm not spending forever trying to figure something out before committing to it. Instead, I'm more open to making mistakes and learning from them. If something does work, then I try to understand why. My individualization is also staying the same as I am focusing on how to work with others with different backgrounds and attitudes and how to work with them based on those distinct values that they hold onto.

  • How are you different today than when you first started at Turing? How are you stronger now than on day 1? How have you struggled?

I am committing to each day much more than the first day. My endurance to focus and solve problems is becoming much stronger. I am also becoming more open and am more willing to help others so that I not only have the opportunity to teach but to learn from others as well. I have changed in the way that I struggle in that I don't stay too long on one problem. I give myself breaks more regularly so that I can really get back to the issue at hand with a clear mind. Before, I used to think that if I stopped I was waisting time. Now I am learning that just those few minutes of getting away from the computer, but not completely shutting my brain down, is helping me to solve complex issues that I was unable to solve previously if I hadn't. I am also aware of the improvement in my communication skills. Being open and having to constantly communicate with my partners has helped me build friendships and prevent any problems that could have occurred from lack of communication.

  • Considering how you describe these themes, how do you want others to see you as you continue to progress through Turing?

I want others to see me as a great partner to work with. One who is open to new ideas and flexible to change. I want them to see me as being futuristic and working towards a better tomorrow rather than getting stuck in the past or present. I want to be seen as a person who is excited to learn and try different things. I want them to trust in what I promise and know that I will do whatever it takes to achieve my goals. Finally, I want others to recognize that I respect each and everyone based on who they are. That they are different and being different is what makes them special in my eyes.

  • Even though your Turing story isn't finished yet, what do you envision for your development in future mods? How will this story end?

I envision branching out with more people and continuing to build on my education. I want to continue building connections and not only develop my own identity as a developer, but try and help others find their way as well. The way that I see it, this story does not end. Even after finishing Turing, it is only the beginning and I hope to continue building on the relationships that I have with others as well as continue to learn throughout my time in the workforce.

  • Finally, write a draft of your story here. This is a short paragraph, 4-6 sentences, describing who you are, why you came to Turing, and what you hope to accomplish while you're here:

Travis Rollins was an intelligent man driven by music and wanting to do something special in the world. However, he had neither the resources or community to achieve his aspirations. He decided to learn front-end engineering after working as an audio engineer for two years, and joined Turing due to its amazing community and high standards for its students. Travis is more inspired when he's being pushed by others, and when others are depending on him. He hopes to find his role in the community at Turing as well as outside of Turing and help build software that can help others. It is his dream to find a profession that is not only able to sustain him and his family, but also is satisfying and fulfilling everyday.
