Women in OSM-- Why it matters

If you [follow me online](https://twitter.com/KathleenLD), you know that yesterday I spent much of [my](https://twitter.com/KathleenLD/status/385792488419508224) [day](https://twitter.com/KathleenLD/status/385921916667576321) [shouting](https://twitter.com/KathleenLD/status/385930784462225408) (excitedly!) about the OSM-US board elections and the fact that of the [8 people who are running](http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Foundation/Local_Chapters/United_States/Elections/2013#Candidates_and_results), 4 of us are women. ([Yes, I am running too](http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/KathleenLD/diary/20129))

This is incredibly significant. Women make up a small percentage of the tech community and [an even smaller percentage of the open tech community](https://adainitiative.org/faq/#why-focus-on-women-in-open-technology-and-culture). Anecdotally, I can tell you that the OpenStreetMap community in the US (and most other places) is overwhelmingly male. However, there is nothing gender
