Week 4: [Link here to your gist]

Prepare for Job Shadow: AEIOU Activities: what questions do you have about the activities that a software developer does on a daily basis?

  • How do you manage your time/breaks
  • What kind of pressure do you feel during sprints? Environment: what questions do you have about the overall environment and culture of this workplace?
  • How has Remote work changed over In-Office?
  • What is more important, culture fit or tech experience? Interactions: what questions do you have about the team at this company? What do you hope to see in your interactions during the shadow?
  • What do general interactions look like in a remote setting
  • How do you feel about the diversity of the company? Objects: what questions do you have about the code or the product?
  • Where do you go when you're stuck on a problem and have googled everything? Users: what questions do you have about how the company interacts with their users?
  • What does product testing look like? is it client based or inside testing? After the Job Shadow, reflect on the same questions; what are your takeaways from the shadow?
  • While the problems where a bit more complex, the situations that the programmer was encountering did not seem unfamiliar with what we encounter in Turing Activities: what was engaging to the person/people you shadowed?
  • He seemed like a totally normal guy that thought about his problems in a very logically structured way Environment: what did you notice about how they talked about the culture and environment of this company?
  • He seemed in general satisified with the company but there was no exposure to his interactions with co-workers to speak of Interactions: what did you notice about your interactions with this person/people?
  • He was a cool dude. Objects: what did you learn about their approach to code and/or product development?
  • Google google google. Users: what did you learn about their approach to their users?
  • Everything has to function to the point you don't realize it's existence What are your main takeaways from the shadow? How will you use this information to help you with your job search strategy?
  • The thought processes and the problems they encountered have a similar feel to what we have had during Turing projects Interview Prep: Pick a successful project and write about it with the STAR method (What was the situation/scenario of the project? What was the task/target of the project? What action steps did you take? What were the results?):
  • Solo project for mod 3 where we needed to implement fetching to create a Hotel booking website, my understanding of fetch requests was limited, so I took a solid day to really google and read up to understand the concept of fetching as it was a major blocker. Once I had gained sufficient knowledge, I was able to implement all of the requirements in the limited time I had. Write about a time you failed and what you learned from that experience:
  • I failed Mod 1 in part because it felt like diving into cold, unknown waters. I know from experience that one of the most important things you can do is utilize your tool belt of resources, in Mod 1, that tool belt was still a nebulous term so on the second run, I made sure to really concretize useful resources and utilize them as necessary Write about how you’ve approached working with a team using a specific example:
  • Delegation and being empathetic to the 'beat' of the group is important. Noticing when the third person in a group has been passive is an oppurtunity to delegate other responsibilities out, other times, it could be noticing when the team is tired and might need a pom. In one such situation, I was able to defuse a situation before it turned south because of an off hand comment that was made from one member to another. ----------------to do--------------- What other stories will you prepare to share?

Do some research into your top companies’ tech stacks; what do you already know? What can you compare to your own learning? What do you need to learn more about? Using this interview prep resource doc, pick out at least 3 resources you will use to prepare for interviews as well as 3 behavioral questions you could practice:
