Autism is a complex developmental disorder with a rapidly increasing population affecting over 3.5 million Americans today. It is referred to as a Spectrum Disorder as each individual is affected differently, uniquely developing under the umbrella diagnosis of autism. Theories about its origins have been numerous, elaborate and ever-changing. There is no cure for Autism and ultimately no means of preventing it. However, there is significant and infinitely interesting research being done to understand it.
When I applied to work at Soaring Eagles Center for Autism my knowledge of this neurological disorder was purely based off psychology course work; what I learned while writing essays, studying for exams, jotting down notes and doodling in an auditorium throughout undergraduate school. I thought I was ready to handle the new job equipped with my knowledge of theories, therapies and behaviors. None of it prepared me to know a child with autism.
