Translation of the article of Genma : Libreoffice - l’icône disquette a disparu ! (https://blog.genma.fr/?Libreoffice-l-icone-disquette-a-disparu) in english

This is a translation of the original article : Libreoffice - l’icône disquette a disparu ! written by Genma on https://blog.genma.fr.

Libreoffice - the floppy disk icon has disappeared!

It was while working on a document in Libreoffice and recording it that I noticed one thing: the disappearance of the floppy disk icon for recording, replaced by something else.

In red if the document has been modified and not saved :

Red icon file if the document is not registered

Green if the document has been saved:

Blue icon file if the document is registered

Yet the pictogram symbolizing the saving of data in graphical interfaces remains a floppy disk, for lack of a more generic symbol Wikipedia - Disparition de la disquette (FR). As evidenced by many tutorials such as this tutorial on how to save a document in Word (FR)

Floppy disk icon to save a document on Microsoft Word

The question is not recent and has been raised on the web for a few years, on various forums and online articles. We can quote this article from November 2016 When will we stop using floppy disks? (FR) which refers to a survey conducted by the companies TeachHub.com and Clever Girls Collective showed that only 14% of participating children were able to recognize this popular medium of information of yesteryear. (The floppy disk, used as a logo to record).

The same year, Le Hollandais volant published a more general reflection : ces icônes qui vieillissent (FR) with the other icons such as the dial phone for example.

Coming back to LibreOffice, it's the end of an era? Or at last a step ahead of its owner competitor ;) #troll
