Thanks for the script, it works great but I didn't like that MySQL password gets prompted in clear text if you don't have the cnf.

I changed line 223 to:

read -s -p "Password: " rootPassword

Good Idea. Will update my script.

Nice job! The only problem i encountered was with line 214:
SQL2="CREATE USER '${DB_USER}'@'%' IDENTIFIED BY '${DB_PASS}';"

I replaced it with:
SQL2="CREATE USER '${DB_USER}'@'${DB_HOST}' IDENTIFIED BY '${DB_PASS}';"

The original line didn't work on:
CentOS release 7 7.7.1908 (Core)
mariadb-5.5.64-1

This script has been tested on Alpine Linux as of March 26th, 2022. It works just fine, except that it throws errors if you use hyphenated user and database names. Other than the suggested "test-db" and "test-user" things not working, this script has been a great help/convenience.

using mysql-create-db-user.sh --database="spex" i get:
ERROR 1044 (42000) at line 1: Access denied for user 'root'@'%' to database 'spex'
with or without .my.cfg. Also the root password still show clear.

I am on almalinux 8.4 and use mysql Ver 15.1 Distrib 10.3.35-MariaDB, for Linux (x86_64) using readline 5.1
Other than this it looks like a neat script
