syncthing setup exclusively with CLI

After long searching I did not find a good description of how to set up Syncthing that works exclusively via CLI without using a Web browser on the devices.

This is useful for example on a headless Raspberry Pi without proxying web-traffic through SSH or with port-forwarding limitations. In this example we will want to share the default folder from Machine A with Machine B

I believe the article was originally written by fede.tft.

It appears they have copied source code to github and updated it for C++11: https://github.com/fedetft/serial-port

Introduction

The serial port protocol is one of the most long lived protocols currently in use. According to wikipedia, it has been standadized in 1969. First, a note: here we're talking about the RS232 serial protocol. This note is necessary because there are many other serial protocols, like SPI, I2C, CAN, and even USB and SATA.

Some time ago, when the Internet connections were done using a 56k modem, the serial port was the most common way of connecting a modem to a computer. Now that we have ADSL modems, the serial ports have disappeared from newer computers, but the protocol is still widely used.

In fact, most microcontrollers, even the newer ones have one or more peripherals capable of communicating using this protocol, and from the PC side, all operating system

open-vm-tools and VMWare Shared Folders for Ubuntu guests

(NB: adapted from this Ask Ubuntu thread -- tested to work on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS through Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy).

Unlike using VMWare Tools to enable Linux guest capabilities, the open-vm-tools package doesn't auto-mount shared VMWare folders. This can be frustrating in various ways, but there's an easy fix.

TL;DR

Install open-vm-tools and run:

sudo mount -t fuse.vmhgfs-fuse .host:/ /mnt/hgfs -o allow_other

Building TensorFlow from source

Building TensorFlow from source (TF 2.3.0, Ubuntu 20.04)

Why build from source?

The official instructions on installing TensorFlow are here: https://www.tensorflow.org/install. If you want to install TensorFlow just using pip, you are running a supported Ubuntu LTS distribution, and you're happy to install the respective tested CUDA versions (which often are outdated), by all means go ahead. A good alternative may be to run a Docker image.

I am usually unhappy with installing what in effect are pre-built binaries. These binaries are often not compatible with the Ubuntu version I am running, the CUDA version that I have installed, and so on. Furthermore, they may be slower than binaries optimized for the target architecture, since certain instructions are not being used (e.g. AVX2, FMA).

So installing TensorFlow from source becomes a necessity. The official instructions on building TensorFlow from source are here: ht
