Why Kenneth (Chris) Holford Should Not Be Chancellor of Purdue University Northwest
In 2015, a student, S, had bullied me for what she believed to be anorexia and I distanced myself from this student. In 2016, student Jasmine Moore, had told a professor that I did not work with her on a project. I discussed with the professor that this was a lie. The professor confronted Jasmine Moore who confessed to her that she had lied and that S had talked her into it. Holford refused to interview the lab instructor Miss Moore had lied to, interviewing only the professor who was the head of the course. Holford refused to interview me. Later, the Dean of Students divulged that Holford chose to do nothing, stating, “I don’t know why Holford chose not to do anything.” Holford refused to meet with another student bullied by S. (Speculation is that Holford knew that Moore had recently been accepted to graduate school at Purdue. Knowing this mark on her record would likely prevent her entrance and her acceptance “looked good” to the College of Science.
S had invited a faculty member to speak at an event only to film him and humiliate him. Holford did not address this.
Holford also refused to meet with students making complaints that they were being refused disability accommodations.
He allegedly gave negative feedback on a faculty’s annual review in the area of research when the faculty was to be reviewed only on teaching and outreach. The faculty member resigned soon after citing being upset at the “pettiness” of this review.
He openly discussed how an incident report from a lab accident was rewritten to remove wording that could potentially make the university liable for said incident.
During the merger, students were informed that they could complete their chemistry degree in Westville. Semesters into the program, we were notified that this was false and asked to “turn in” professors who propagated this “myth” allegedly per Holford’s request. Holford, again, would not meet on this.
I was told that my research would no longer count toward the chemistry major because my professor had me do research (in physical chemistry) outside her field (allegedly chemistry education.) Her field was indeed physical chemistry. In an attempt to have my research reinstated, Holford would not meet with me. I ended up changing my major just to graduate and get away from his policy of not dealing with anything.
There are many other examples as to why he should not be chancellor. These are only a few. Reach out to faculty and students with the promise of anonymity and more stories will come out of the woodwork.
I find Holford to be dishonest, lazy, and often acts in a way that is not in line with the core values of the university. In addition, he works against the best interests of both students and faculty.
Edit: Thank you for the supportive messages. I knew there were more people affected by his decisions but was unaware of the breadth and depth of them.
