Recently I found this helpful website: https://youtube-dl-sources.org
For now I recommend to stick with official sources as they are still available on the official website.

The signature of the source tarball on the official website isn't verifying for me; do you have the same issue? I don't think it's a reliable source if the signature doesn't verify.

I have absolutely no idea, I haven't tried downloading any of those, I'm just saving the links I thought could be useful. But yeah, if the signatures aren't matching something is likely wrong.

This archive has the right tarball, where the signature verifies: https://cache.tehsausage.com/ytdl/ . EDIT: looks like the website was fixed now, too, with the correct tarball back in place for now. the new website still doesn't link to the irc channel anymore, which is #youtube-dl on freenode.
