Being a SE Lead Instructor at Flatiron

Above all, a lead instructor is an ambassador for the Flatiron Way and the Flatiron Educational Principles.

The responsibilities of a Lead Instructor

Big-picture understander / Lecture giver

You have a good understanding of the Flatiron curriculum, in particular the current Module you are teaching. You are the main lecturer for the cohort and you make sure that each lecture is scaffolded and given in a way that forms an overarching story for the module.

Health checker, Pace setter

With the help of the coaches, you should always be on top of how well your cohort is performing, who is ahead, who is left behind, and plan accordingly. The wiki schedule is a great guideline and is constantly being updated, so you should aim to stick to it as much as possible, but the needs of each cohort can differ, circumstance can come into play, and you might need to adjust things slightly.

Top-level debugger

You walk the floor, find where students are stuck, delegate the to coaches where possible, and take on the bugs that coaches struggle to fix.

Proactive conflict resolver

Through setting expectations clearly and having tough conversations often and early when needed, you will most of the time defus a situation before it even has a chance to become something bigger. Act with Radical Candor

SEM scout

Your Senior Educational Manager is responsible for the overall health of the campus and taking care of any escalations. You make sure that they are constantly aware of how things are going and any rising concerns through clear communication, be it in meetings, Slack or any other channel.

Master delegator

Even though your job is to be in the know and set the pace, you know when you are actually needed and when you can delegate a task to a coach. You aim to strike a balance in which you have the time you need to prepare for your lectures and oversee the progress of a cohort and coaches are trusted and given room to grow.

A pack leader, not a lone wolf

You work as a unit with your coaches, with your SEM, with other campuses and ultimately with Flatiron as a whole. You follow current process and documentation if available, you improve it if you see the opportunity, and you create it (or assist) if it doesn't exist.
