Nasuverse

So you want to get into Nasuverse

Essentials

These are written by Nasu (unlike most TM stuff that comes out nowadays).

It's recommended that you read/watch/play them in the given order, however you can add other entries in between like reading KNK LN before the movies, playing Tsukihime PLUS+DISC or Kagetsu Tohya between Tsukihime and FSN or reading/watching Fate/Zero between F/HA and MahoYo etc.

  • Kara no Kyoukai (movies)
  • Tsukihime (VN)
  • Fate/stay night (VN)
  • Fate/hollow ataraxia (VN)
  • Mahoutsukai no Yoru (VN)

Anyone who says watch the F/Z or UBW anime to start out is a filthy secondary and should be gunned down on the streets like the degenerate they are.

From this point on, you can go read/watch/play anything in any order.

Highly recommended (written by Nasu)

You can technically not read/watch/play these and be fine but they are pretty good and written by Nasu.

  • Tsukihime PLUS+DISC (VN)
  • Kagetsu Tohya (VN)
  • Fate/EXTRA (game)
  • Fate/EXTRA CCC (game)
  • Fate/EXTRA Last Encore (anime)
  • Fate/stay night: Garden of Avalon (LN)

FATE/EXTRA anime should only be watched after playing through the games. It has style but it's pretty non-sensical.

Recommended (not written by Nasu)

Fate/Zero is a prequel to Fate/stay night and is the story of 4th (Fuyuki) Holy Grail War.

Best time to read (or watch) Fate/Zero is after Fate/hollow ataraxia. Personally, I'm not a big fan of Fate/Zero but that has more to do with my dislike of Butcher's writing style.

Fate/strange Fake is an alternate reality where 70 years after the 3rd (Fuyuki) Holy Grail War (the one you saw briefly in Heaven's Feel) a group copies the Grail ritual and stages a new war in United States.

Fate/strange Fake originally came out in 2008 as a one-off but it has since been officially published by Kadokawa since 2015. The new F/SF has pretty much everything the original had, with the only differences being slight differences in one of the chapters, afterword from Narita and small interview with Nasu. FSF anime isn't out yet so I can't talk about its quality.

  • Fate/Zero (LN)
  • Fate/strange Fake (LN)
  • Fate/strange Fake (manga)

Niche (written by Nasu)

These are the last two major settings from Nasu.

Both take place on Earth in the distant future. In Tsuki no Sango events of Tsukihime did not occur and the world is a "a degenerated world where magecraft yet lingers". In Angel Notes, the mandkind killed the planet on which they lived with pollution and warfare.

  • Angel Notes (LN)
  • Tsuki no Sango (LN)

More from Nasu but not really recommended

The translation for the books aren't very good, aside from this the writing itself is also very amateurish. Movies are better in every regard.

  • Kara no Kyoukai (LN)
  • Kara no Kyoukai: Mirai Fukuin (LN)
  • Kara no Kyoukai: Shuumatsu Rokuon (LN)

Animated stuff

Excluding Fate/Zero, these can only be watched as extra to essentials.

Due of the nature of VN to anime adaptations, ufotable had to cut extreme amount of content. UBW doesn't give Emiya and Archer enough characterization while HF doesn't give Illya and Kotomine enough characterization.

MahoYo movie isn't out yet but I'm assuming it will have the same problem with UBW and HF anime.

FSF isn't out yet so I can't give an opinion on the quality of the product.

  • Fate/Zero (anime)
  • Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works (anime)
  • Fate/stay night Heaven's Feel (movies)
  • Mahoutsukai no Yoru (movie)
  • Fate/strange Fake (anime)

Comedy stuff

Carnival Phantasm is a gag anime that should be watched after essentials. It segways nicely into Fate/Prototype.

  • Carnival Phantasm (anime)
  • Fate/Prototype (anime)

Mystery stuff

Lord El-Melloi II isn't written by Nasu but quality wise, it's pretty good. I've only seen the anime but heard that LN is pretty good too.

DDD is written by Nasu but it will never be finished. I haven't read it yet.

  • Lord El-Melloi II-sei no Jikenbo (LN)
  • Lord El-Melloi II-sei no Bouken (LN)
  • Lord El-Melloi II Sei no Jikenbo: Rail Zeppelin Grace Note (anime)
  • Decoration Disorder Disconnection (LN)

Comfy stuff

Extra comfy slice of life.

  • Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan (manga)
  • Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan (anime)

Loli stuff

I don't care for this. Fan service goes away after a while.

Oath Under Snow was cool and can be watched as standalone.

  • Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya (manga)
  • Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya (anime)

Bad stuff

Not a big fan of it and wouldn't recommend it to anyone who wants something of quality.

  • Fate/Apocrypha (LN)
  • Fate/Apocrypha (anime)

Terrible stuff

I don't like it and neither should you.

  • Fate/Grand Order (game gacha)

Porn is good though.

Non-existent stuff

It doesn't exist.

  • Tsukihime (anime)

Fate/EXTELLA

I haven't played it yet, but from my understanding it should be played after playing Fate/EXTRA games. I will eventually get to it.

  • Fate/EXTELLA (game)
  • Fate/EXTELLA LINK (game)

Melty Blood

I haven't played it and never will. It seems interesting but fighting games aren't really my cup of tea.

  • Games

    • Melty Blood (game)
    • Melty Blood Re-ACT (game)
    • Melty Blood Act Cadenza (game)
    • Melty Blood Re-ACT Final Tuned (game)
    • Melty Blood Act Cadenza Ver.B (game)
    • Melty Blood Act Cadenza Ver.B2 (game)
    • Melty Blood Actress Again (game)
    • Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code (game)
    • Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code Ver. 1.05 (game)
    • Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code Ver. 1.07 (game)
    • Melty Blood: Type Lumina (game)
  • Manga

    • Melty Blood (manga)
    • Melty Blood X (manga)
    • Melty Blood: Hana no Miyako! (manga)
    • Melty Blood: Rojiura Nightmare (manga)
    • Melty Blood: Type Lumina - Piece in Paradise (manga)

Everything not mentioned above

I either don't know about it or don't care about it.

Side note regarding Tsukihime

There's a remake. I haven't read it and probably never will.

I read some spoilers, I am not a big fan of going back and changing stuff you have already written just because you want to get more money from FGO whales.

  • Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon- (VN)
  • Tsukihime -The other side of red garden- (VN)

Side note regarding MahoYo

Unfortunately MahoYo is another entry in Nasuverse that will probably never be finished.

The original release from 2012 hasn't been translated and probably never will (although people were saying the same about CCC and that finally came out). I don't have a frame of reference to compare the Remake to but at the moment, it's the only available thing if you want to read MahoYo.
